Hey guys its been a while, but i'm buying a new timing chain gasket set for my 223. It says 223 : with zero lash valves, or 223: with out zero lash valves. My truck is a 64 and how can i tell if i have zero lash valves or not?
As far as I know, zero-lash rocker arms were only installed on passenger car engines during the last few years of 223 production. I think they were trying to achieve quieter operation and lower maintenance without re-designing the
engine for hydraulic lifters.
Take off the valve cover and inspect the rocker arms. If they look like conventional rockers, then you don't have a zero-lash engine. A zero-lash rocker arm has a hinged cam at the end of it that contacts the valve stem, and a spring-loaded plunger that rotates the cam until takes up the valve lash.
I think that the zero-lash engines also had a different camshaft and an extra water hole in the block that the truck water pump won't cover up, but I wasn't aware that there was a difference in timing cover gaskets.
