Just what the title says. I'm looking for the M5R2 or M5OD-R2 transmission. I'd like to find someone who sells a rebuilt/refurbished model maybe with some kind of warranty. 2nd gear synchro is shot in mine plus 5th gear is all kinds of screwed up. I was hoping to just do a swap as I don't have the time to spend rebuilding one...plus I don't want to screw it up.
This is for an '88 F150 4x4 with the 300 inch 6 cylinder.
If anybody has any experience with this, price is a concern also. I don't want to drop $1200 on one of these transmissions.
unfortunately these transmissions are hard to come by for cheap. All the shops ****** them up and rebuild them and charge $1000 for a rebuilt with almost no core.
i'v only seen 1 or 2 4x4's in the junk yards and they are in rough shape. I would also keep an eye out for a smallblock ZF-5 which is the tranny that came in f250's with the 351. It is much stronger and more desirable but harder to find, but you never know what you may come across. I got my ZF at a yard i had never been too and just happened to stop at on the way home.
It would be nice to put in a ZF-5, but for the price I would pay it is way overkill for my needs. I may be better off getting what i've got rebuilt. I do like the gear ratios of the M5R2 also. I don't have a need for a granny gear. Any hard pulling i could do in 4 low.
I'll have to make some calls I guess and see if I can get someone to rebuild it. Anyone know a good place to get a rebuild kit for it? I looked around and i've seen them, but I dont know where the best prices/quality are at.
$1000 was a general overview of what iv seen online. And that include the $200 core.
I know some really good shops in north Texas, and these guys not only offer a good price, but they really know what they are doing as well. They would probably do it for around $600 for a complete rebuild. Not a refurbish like most shops do.
I had been seeing prices that were like $800 + 150 or so core charge, then $75-100 shipping, each way. I did find a company that sells them for $650, $150 core, and $75 shipping each way which seems like the best option at the moment.
I got a quote from a local builder and he said at least $800, more if it needs something else. I'm in NJ, and shopping around I haven't seen anyone semi-local that remanufactures this transmission. I'm still weighing my options, but either way it looks like i'm better off taking my time to find the best price.
If I could find one that is known to be good, that I could visually see work, then I would go for it. But it seems that'll be hard. I refuse to get a junkyard trans since I don't want to do all the work just to have the same problems immediately.
Oh really. Can you tell me more about it? Is it still in the truck? Wish I had PM feature. If you want to give me your email, maybe we can discuss that way.
Thanks for the offer, but I want to get something I know is good. It can shift in all the gears while it's stationary but I wouldnt find out if it's good until it's in there.
I've had a couple instances where someone's told me a transmission is good. But it ends up slipping, shuddering (auto) or it grinds a little bit when shifting, or its hard to put into gear. Removing and installing a trans is no small task..I only wanna do it once
