4R70W Shifting Problem "Help"
2000 f-150 Lariat with 5.4L Triton
VIN: 1FTRX17L2YKA59947
Transmission Type: Door Code: U – Automatic 4R70W
Transmission screwed up today on my fathers truck after running over a curb in a parking lot.... and I'm curious to what could be the possible problem. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
- Truck will not go in Reverse.
- Truck goes into 2nd gear when placed in 1st, 2nd and also Drive.
- When placed in Drive the truck does not have 1st, 3rd, or 4th Gear.
- Truck stays in 2nd gear when placed in Drive.
- When OD button is pressed, "truck will shift into 3rd gear." When pressed again to try and shift it into fourth gear the truck goes into neutral gear.
The same results happen over and over. The transmission fluid looks new. Truck barely has has over 100k miles and my father babies his truck... So I don't see what possibly could of happened to his transmission. It just started screwing up after running over a concrete curb that separates parking spaces, "by what he says."
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
Took the truck to transmission shop to have it looked at....Will get back to you with the problem later in future...
Sounds obvious but did you look for damage to the transmission oil pan? If it got mashed up then it could be blocking the filter pickup, or it took out the solenoids or damaged the plastic circuit carrier inside the trans. I don't know if carrier is the right word... the older 4R's has wires inside the pan. The newer ones 98+ (if I remember correctly) have a plastic tray looking thing with no wires... they are internal to that plastic tray.
I asked him, "what was the problem." He said, "the mechanic did a complete rebuild."
My father did not give me any other information then that...
The mechanic did a rebuild? What did your father get charged for this job? Why the lack of information? Does your dad not want to tell you, or did the mechanic say he needed this without further explanation? Does the trans look like it's been worked on recently? Marks on the bellhousing bolts and cooler lines and such where a wrench was used? I am suspicious of mechanics... that's how I am. There are some good ones, but they are hard to find. I used to work for a private shop right after school and before I got a real job in industrial controls. Got fired for refusing to sell things that customer's didn't need. Best thing that they could do for me.
I hope you didn't take that truck to AAMCO... all I've ever heard about them is "all they do is sell rebuilds"...
