Vintage Ford RV Sets Up Camp on the Auction Block
Built on a 1937 Ford truck frame, Housecar Camper steals the show at campgrounds and car shows.
RVs are handy tools for doing it all. They’re perfect for camping, of course, but can also serve as support vehicles for you and your crew at racing events and car shows, not to mention as one’s home during slower periods of the year.
If you’re looking for an RV that truly stands out from the big monoliths of the open road, though, your best bet is this amazing 1937 Housecar Camper we found while looking through the catalog of Barrett-Jackson’s upcoming auction in Scottsdale, Arizona January 12 through 20.
One of the many cars from the Bryan Frank Collection to have graced many a Barrett-Jackson auction over the years, this green Ford is built upon a 1937 Ford truck chassis, and was assembled at Ford’s plant in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Providing the Ford camper with plenty of motivation is its 3.6-liter “21-stud” flathead V8, which made between 85 and 94 horses back in the day, depending what heads were used. The flathead is linked to a three-speed manual to deliver those old ponies to the back.
The cabin is largely unchanged since it left St. Paul, from the big steering wheel and green metal dash, to the white gauges and windshield regulator. But it’s the behind the driver’s seat where this Ford shines.
The camper portion of the Ford was framed in wood, then wrapped in its lovely green metal skin. There’s a table behind the driver’s seat, an aluminum sink, a bed, cabinets, lots of vintage photos and knickknacks, and the whole thing is covered by a silver roof with a pop-up section for venting heat and smoke while cooking.
There are plenty of RVs and fifth wheels out there to suit your needs, but few have has much cool and class as this Ford. Whoever walks away with this will steal the show at every campground they visit.
