2024 Ford F-150 May Finally Debut Long-Awaited Multi-Function Tailgate
The forthcoming, refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 may finally get a feature that its competitors have offered for years now.
For a number of years now, the Ford F-150’s chief competitors – namely, the Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Ram 1500 – have all offered some sort of multi-function tailgate. These units feature all sorts of built-in steps and other gadgets that make them more useful, but for whatever reason, The Blue Oval has been a bit slow to adapt to this trend. Many expected the all-new 2021 model to come equipped with a multi-function tailgate, but it merely added small updates like a bottle opener and built-in ruler. Now, however, it seems as if the forthcoming refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 might finally mark the debut of a multifunction tailgate on America’s perennially best-selling pickup, according to Ford Authority.
This news shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given the fact that Ford was reportedly working on a multi-function tailgate more than two years ago, and filed a patent for one featuring three distinct segments and a center section that opens independently of the other two earlier this year. Regardless, those who’ve been longing for such a feature may finally get their wish granted as soon as next year.
The 2024 Ford F-150 is expected to receive a mid-cycle refresh, right on schedule for the model’s recent cadence of getting a redesign every six years and a refresh midway through that time frame. Earlier this month, a 2024 F-150 prototype was spied driving around with heavy camo around the front and rear, signaling that the pickup is set to receive – at a minimum – revised styling at both ends, which is typical of a mid-cycle refresh.
Perhaps more notable, however, is the fact that this prototype was also wearing heavy camo on its tailgate – which could very well signal the forthcoming debut of a proper multi-function tailgate. Given the fact that the full-size truck wars have truly heated up in recent months, threatening Ford’s lead in that regard, such a change makes far too much sense not to happen, though at this point, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to truly confirm it.
