2020 Ford Super Duty: FTE Talks Release Date, Specs
Will the 2020 Super Duty bring major changes, or just minor updates? Our members debate these hot topics.
You would think that by now, we’d have more details surrounding the all-new 2020 Ford Super Duty line of pickups. And yet, we’ve got little more than speculation and some spy shots. Chances are, we’ll learn more about Ford’s heavy duty truck redo early in the year, perhaps at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. But for now, we’re left with what our intrepid experts in the Ford Truck Enthusiasts forums have to offer in this fascinating thread.
As to why Ford has remained mum on the 2020 Super Duty, there are plenty of theories.
“I think they’re holding out as long as possible because there are enough changes in the works that it might hurt 2019 sales,” said Rooftop. “When people see it and the new improvements, they will stop buying the 2019s and Ford doesn’t want that.”
“Hopefully after the new year, but it still might not be for a while,” added SD2. “The good news for the 2019s is that they might offer some nice rebates.”
“GM and FCA are coming out with new 2020 models,” said hindy. “Which means Ford doesn’t want to show their cards too soon.”
Which makes sense, of course. The 2019 Super Duty just came out, so Ford doesn’t want to cannibalize its own sales. Or tip off the competition. But as far as how radically different the 2020 Super Duty will actually be is a huge matter of debate. Among the many that chime in, JD’sBigredv10 makes a pretty strong case for evolution, not revolution.
“There is no way Ford will make any significant changes to the exterior styling or interior of the Super Duty any time soon. As always, GM and Ram are playing catch up. Their new designs will match Ford in some areas and pass them in others. It won’t be enough to change the balance of power.
The half-tons drive the market. The 2020 Super Duty updates will be similar to the 2018 F-150 updates. 10-speed transmission, grille/lights, new wheel styles, possibly a tweak of the tailgate and maybe the new gas engine. It definitely won’t include anything major in the interior. There is a 0% chance that the Super Duty will get a new interior before the F-150 does. When the F-150 interior gets redesigned (my guess is at least a couple years down the road), it will trickle down to the Super Duty.”
“The 2020 Super Duty is a normal refresh cycle (4th year). From the spy shots, the headlights appear to be the same. But with a revised grille. And I’m sure Ford wants to make a big splash with interiors, even with the XL. I would expect the Power Stroke to keep a clear lead in diesel horsepower.”
