Changing the transmission filter

New to me 2006 F350 6.0 dually. Going to change oil and filter as well as the transmission fluid. I did a search and got all kinds of answers but they were old threads so I thought I'd ask.....again.

Should I replace the transmission filter on the Auto I have or just have Jiffy Lube do their thing?

The filter up front, looks like a roll of TP. Use an impact wrench, do it yourself. The filter inside the Trans pan is for rocks and trees.

You could upgrade that to the 08' pan and filter, it does 100% of the oil instead of 10% in by pass and then throw the bypass TP filter in the trash. Best $93 you'll spend, make sure you use Mercon SP or LV.

Tranny fluid is easy on a Torqshift as there is a drain plug. If you can change your own oil you can do the tranny fluid. It's 8-9 qts so make sure you have a big enough pan.

As watson said the stock filter is good for the life of the tranny so no need to drop the pan. Just do the "toilet paper" filter.

Many go for the 6.4 filter/pan. About $100 in parts and you get much better tranny filtration.

Randy,
Knowing the tp filter is a smaller micron sized filter then the 07 and "assuming" it's smaller then the newer 08, why wouldn't you just install it, knowing that that additional filtering can't be bad. Seems like a good option not used?

That's a bad assumption. The newer 08 internal filter is a smaller micron filter than the older external filter.

I hear ya Mark but just can't imagine the flow necessary to provide fluid could work through such a extremely fine filter. As a secondary filter, no hurry about flow rate.
Guess I'll have to see if there's info out there to answer that.

And the older filter up front is only getting a smaller portion.... over time it gets all of it, just not as fast. IIRC it's a bypass filter, so your circulating 90% of the trash through the internals constantly..... this is one of the best upgrades you'll buy, PERIOD.

When the time comes to change mine I'm going to go with this. 5R110 Transmission Filter (2003 & UP) (For Use w/ 6.4L Trans Pan)

I talked to Ed and it's a better full flow filter than the '08 and up Ford stock filter. Have to use the 6.4 pan though.

Buy the 08' pan, it comes with a filter and reusable gasket. Total cost was $93

Direct replacement, takes about 30 minutes to do. I even did a write up on what part number, pictures and everything, a search of my screen name should turn it up.

I hope your going to do your own engine oil. I would not trust the
minimum wage want to be grease monkeys to do things correctly.

Stick with OEM filters. Someone can post the crossover list of
who makes what filter

The problem with the non OEM type filters is that they use adaptors
that can fail and let plastic go where it was not meant to be or have
a taller cap that the filter fell out of and someone replaced it with the
correct filter and not the cap. That lets dirty oil past the filter.

And I could go on.

I took a look and didn't see any claims to that effect, what did Ed tell you that convinced you it was a better filter? The 6.4 filter runs in the mid $30s, Ed's price on it is $38.xx. (part: 8C3Z-7A098-D)

Maybe he'll jump in here and tell us about it...

It would appear that some research is warranted....
$33 for a filter and $93 for the pan..... or $93 and get both, not a very difficult choice.

Since we're talking my about 08 pan on 07. Can someone post a pic of both? Not sure if my Dynotech has 08 pan but sounds like an easy well worth it upgrade. Cheers

I swapped to the 08 pan and filter. I also run the stock bypass filter that's stock up front. There's no reason not to really. I probably just won't change it as often now. They're cheap enough now and the more filtering the better.
