Manual Transmission questions.
Hello folks,
I was pondering doing some power adding modifcations to the F250, I've replaced the downpipe with a 3 inch pipe, and switched over to the 6637 intake. But I'm thinking about doing something more, like new injectors.
Anyways I got to thinking about weak links. I really dont know anything about the transmission in my truck, the S5-47. I know the 47 is for its factory rating 470 ft-lbs of torque, but much beyond that...
So I ask, just how much power can the transmission take? and when it does break, what breaks? Is this something I should really even be worried about?
Would I be better served by puting in a 6 speed from a super duty? If So, whats all involved with that?
Thanks.

ZF5 is strong, but it wears out like any other. =)
A good clutch, and its good to go.
A set of injectors will push though a stock DMF setup.
Cody is probably seeing 800-1000 ft lbs on his Drag truck with a Dual Disk. and Neal has dyno'd 1k on the torque as well.
the 47 and 42 are just the ... model numbers I guess I would call it.
The difference is the throw out bearing shaft.
The older ones are pressed from the inside, and the newer ones are collard in.
I'm sure there are some other changes. =)
I used to have your obsession for the ZF6 too Jacob, but its nothing special. Especially after driving one. I like using 4 gears instead of 5. =)
I pulled a gravity wagon with a zf6, I was really wishin for my truck and my zf5. The zf6 didn't work with the idle right vs pulling/speed and the 3.73 gears.

ZF 5 speed is a fine tranny. Like William said it will wear out like any other part but rest assured it will last a long time. I have had mine since new and it still holds good. I have dyno'd over 1000 tq on one dyno and around 800 on others. I push over 400 HP to the wheels and still no problems.
I recently took my 41' 5th wheel camper to RRE event. Raced it on the drag strip with 3000 RPM clutch drops for launch. Dyno'd it the next day and then pulled the camper back home on Friday.
No worries my friend. Your tranny will do you just fine.
