I have a 95 F250 Supercab 4X4 now, but I have been craving a Crew cab. Would you leave the OBS for a 99 with comprable mileage, or should I be patient and hold out for another OBS. Which has the advantage the 5spd or the auto.
If anyone has a lead on a OBS Crew cab... shoot it my way.
Dream truck=97 crew cab long bed 4x4 with a ZF 6 or built auto. And both trannys have advantages. In OBS with stock trans the 5 speed is more rugged but geared lower in the final drive=worse mileage and higher cruising rpms. The auto is kind of susceptible to failure in a stock setup but can be toughened up with some $$ or made invincible with a lot of $$$$.

ZF5 final drive is .74
ans E4OD is about .71 or .72
I'm not sure what the ZF6s is, but its around the same.
=)
Stick with the OBS, unless you can find an early 99. which is the OBS setup with a SD body and some nice tweaks.
There shoudln't be any 97's with a zf6 unless it was swaped in, because they put zf5's and zf6's in the 99s

I like the OBS also for the simple reason you can get to the rear of the engine better where the turbo is. It just sticks out more vice the SD more of the rear of the engine is into the firewall area. Just my opinion though as I like having easier access to work on my vehicles.
One reason why I don't like FWD cars.

I was looking at a 99 F350 7.3 auto Crew cab with 230000 miles on it "not dually" for the upgrades such as 4" lift, front and rear Ranch hand bumbers, and IC, for $9K but it REALLY is not as good looking as an OBS.
So, you guys are basically advising an auto has lower final gears thus giving better economy, no ZF-6 untill the NBS. I have been holding off on any mods for my present truck untill I went through all the past mechanical issues, but now I am at a cross roads- keep on or pursue that dream Crew Cab truck
Having owned a short box (99 SD) I'll NEVER own another one again. Ever. Kicked myself from day 1 for buying the damn thing. Also, having owned a 99 SD for 2 years... you can see what I own now I mostly sold it to get rid of the payments but I like my OBS way better.
If you decide to go SD I'd shoot for a late 99 or 00. The E99 is kind of a mutt and parts can be harder to find (and more expensive). At least with the late 99-00 you are almost guaranteed a forged rod motor (some 00's are freaks and have PMR's OEM) and you have the option of the 38R as a drop in turbo with nothing else needed. Plus you get all the other benefits of the SD.
I will say this though- I much prefer the shift strategy of the 4R100 over the E4OD. I wish it was a simple swap to put a 4R in an OBS. I'm not a fan of the ZF-6 if you do much driving in town but to each his own.

My 95 was a short Box. They are so useless!!!!!!!!!
If you want to know about an Early 99, talk to Clay at RiffRaff
Yeah. ZF6 was just annoying to drive. I only drove 30-40 miles with a gravity wagon. Ugh.
I did like the gear ratio of reverse though.
