How Far Have You Gone For A Truck?

I was going through some old pictures tonight and ran across some pics I'd forgot about that were taken when I went after my F-1.

I bought the truck on eBay back in October, 2002. Wow! Where does the time go? I remember the trip like it was last week. The truck was in western CO, but the seller had another car to pick up in Blue Hill, NE and offered to haul it that far for a pittance if I could meet him there on that day. I took him up on the offer and those pics were taken in the parking lot of the motel where we met right before we headed back east. The truck traveled 1337 miles to get to its new home and I pulled it 743 of those. My beloved '97 has long gone to a new home, but the '51 is still here. It looks exactly the same today other than it wears aluminum slots and newer tires. I really ought to think about doing something with it one of these days! The F-2 gets it first, though. (sigh) So many projects, so little time!

ANYWAYS! So who else's truck has traveled a long way and how far have you personally gone to get them?

Well Ok, I'll play along. my 51 F1 was purchased about 2 miles from were I was living at the time, (about 5 miles from were I was building our new house) so it was towed to a guys place who was kind enough to let me store it on his property for 6 months while I built our house. Then it came home but sat neglected, where it still sits neglected! LOL

But I did drive approx 2,046 miles (roundtrip)from Salt Lake to Goessel Kansas for a damn trailer load of 8.25x20" lockring wheels and tires! for my 52 F-6 (sorry no pictures) Still trying to get rid of the damn things, What was I thinking ?>??? oh well I did get some other parts that helped pay for the trip at least.

thats a nice looking 51 btw, much better than my 51 when I picked it up back in 2001

I ended up going to Clifton Kansas for my F-3. I actually bought 2 F-3's from a retired farmer for 500 bucks, moved them to my uncle's farm where they sat for several years until I could figure out how to get them to 'ol Waterford Virginia. I ended up selling one and am having fun working on the other...

I drove 400 miles one way for my '48 F-4 parts truck about 5 years ago. It was an interesting trip. I had Dmptrkr pick up a set of fenders in PA for Christopher2 in MN. Christopher2 picked up a set of F-1 rim north of his location. I drove the fenders up to Minneapolis to pick up two '48-50 hoods I won a eBay, then to Chrisopher2's house to drop off the fenders and pick up the rims, then we headed 30 west to pick up a '48-50 front clip I found on the Ford Barn. The next morning we drove north to a the town of Mora, MN to pick up the F-4. We then headed home.

I drove 800 miles one way to pick up my panel truck in Palmyra, PA, 4 years ago. We then took a round about way home visiting Gettysburg and other interesting tourist attractions, and stopping to visit a couple of internet truck friends in northern PA, including our own Penn Dick. All in total I drove about 2000 miles the entire trip.

Wow, that's a clean '51!

I traveled 550 miles round trip, so towing it half of that, but I did have to go across the bighorn mountains and that made it an interesting tow for sure. Good thing I had just put new front brakes on my Cummins truck!

I hauled one MH home from the Fargo N.D. area. Got lucky when the seller offered to take it there from the western part of the state near Williston. That trip was about 750 each way. The other MH came from a small town west of Phoenix, AZ. That was about 1500 each way. The longest trip was to San Jose, CA, to pick up my buddy's '57 panel. That was about 2100 each way. These were all before $3.00 gas, but it probably would still have been cheaper to ship each of them. But I like road trips. Stu

I went from San Francisco to Spokane, WA to get my truck. It helps that I have an uncle in Spokane who checked out the truck for me prior to me heading up there. I flew up, bought the truck, spent the weekend with my uncle and flew back to SF where I arranged shipping from down here. I don't have another vehicle (or trailer) that I could tow it with, and driving the truck the 875 miles or so was likley a bad idea (winter, didn't know how to double-clutch yet, 3.92 rear end, etc.) so shipping was the only way to go. It was a very good trip that I'm glad I made .

My longest trip in my 1955 F100 was 300 miles. With a 15 gallon gas tank and an FE 390 motor, I made several stops.

I bought both of my trucks locally, but have made several long road trips to pick up other vehicles I have bought. I guess I am on the longest trip with my 53 right now, 660 miles yesterday to a show and vacation in the Smokey Mountains.

Went about 20 miles in 1975 to buy my F1 for $100.; pull it out of the weeds, put air in the flat tires and drive it back with no exhaust system, no lights and very little brakes!
In 2004, took my 2000 F150 and flatbed trailer, drove to Boise where I picked up my son and continued on to Wichita, Kansas. 1800 miles.
Drove back hitting a bad hail storm in Colorado and a wind/sand storm in southern Idaho! So 3600 miles and 5 days! btw: it was a fun trip and so worth it in so many ways.

We made an 830 mile round trip to Burlison, TN to pick up the 55 panel, all in one day. The plan was to go look at it, make the deal and come home the next day but Mother Nature had other plans that involved a 20 inch snow fall. We made it back home around 1am and went to bed. When we got up the next morning I had to clear the driveway of snow just to get the trailer unloaded.

Aquiring the Merc was a nearly 500 mile round trip from my house, about 25 miles from the WA/OR border, north to where I could see Canada from the guy's house I loaded it up at. What a fun day. I sure wish I'd remembered my camera.
