Vibration at highway speeds.
#32
Recently purchased a 2008 F150 fx4 with 100k miles on it and have been experiencing shaking in the steering wheel and throughout the cab at highway speeds. It isn't every time but often enough. I'm also getting a lot of break dust buildup on my front driver's side - much more than on any other tire. Any relation to the wobble or do I have two separate issues?

It gets more complicated with 4WD, but still, most front end shimmy is related to wheel balance or bad tires. Bent wheels can be responsible too. One clue is interesting - the brake dust. You could have a caliper on that wheel that is sometimes not fully releasing. The rotor may also be a little warped, causing the chatter. You could have a combination of all those things on the front axle, and considering 4WD, there are more possibilities.

Vibration at highway speeds
Thanks for the reply. Given that it's my first truck and I haven't had it very long I wanted to get some idea of what the problem might be before taking it to the shop and having a mechanic look at it.
Strange that I don't have any squealing in the breaks or other steering issues besides the shaking at 50-70mph. I've only used it once, but the parking brake nearly got stuck - took me awhile to get it to let go and when I did the light remained on in dash for several days. I'll start with balancing the tires and getting the brakes checked and see if that doesn't clear things up. Appreciate the help!

Alrighty. I did a cursory search and couldn't find a related link, so thought I'd start a thread about this.
My 2005 FX4 has a vibration when it gets over about 50mph. I can feel it in the steering wheel, and throughout the cab as well. It steers straight even with the vibration. What could this be?

Possibly brakes or needs alignment is what it sounded like..
It could be wayyyyy worse!

Vibration at highway speeds
I had a seized caliper on my front passenger tire that was causing most of the problem. Pads, rotors, and brake lines were bad. Needed about $1500 of work to repair/replace everything needed. Wasn't happy about it but it rides smoothly now. Worth contacting the dealer I bought it from to complain about a malfunction like this 3 months after purchase?

Well, I had a buddy balance my tires and found that the right front was pretty badly out of balance. The other three were a half ounce or so, but the right front was 5.5 in one spot, 3 oz in another and a couple of little 1/4 ouncers. He got it balanced out, though. I was only able to get the truck up to about 60 and only for about 20 seconds, but I felt no vibration at all. I'll get it up to about 70 or so on the freeway in the morning, so I'll know a little more then. I'm guessing that right front is slightly bent?

Just had my oil changed and tires rotated. had speed wobble (as i call it) and thought it was tires out of balance. went to my buddies shop and they were just fine. we started poking around and noticed quite a bit of play in the upper ball joints. Took truck to the dealer and both upper ball joints are shot. good thing i decided to check it out before the warrenty runs out (3000 km to go).
