Lucas ATF additive

Is the Lucas Tranny slip fix stuff any good to put in an E4OD for a tranny flush, with the fresh atf?

Also, is wal mart atf ok, or what is a good CHEAP ATF to use in a truck with 209k, no idea if the tranny has ever been gone through, rebuilt, but probably not. I do tow a lot, but $250 tranny flush just can't happen now.

OH, how many quarts will a 97 7.3 take? Tranny is stock.

Is your transmission slipping right now? I woudn't add the lucas stuff with new oil. but I woudn't add the lucas stuff unless it was a last ditch effort to get a couple more weeks out of a shot transmission.

You are asking alot for an oil to be cheap and good for heavy use like towing. I don't know much about the walmart stuff, but if it is mecron 5 and fully synthetic it should do the trick. Heavy towing and increased heat is going to wear out a lesser quality oil faster.

I think the drop pan and refill is something like 9 quarts but I am a little fuzzy on that. You can do a DIY flush by pulling cooler hose and having a helper start and stop the engine while you fill and catch the old oil. It works pretty slick.

I believe it is around 13 quarts, it does vary slightly for 2wd or 4wd, your owner's manual should say, maybe,. Do not use cheap ATF!!!!, Use something reputable, it is well worth the little extra, I personally use Redline synthetics in my tranny, It is TOP quality, but, it is over $10 per quart. and as long as you are not experiencing problems with your tranny, just use straight ATF, no additive. Just my .02

From my personal experience I wouldn't add additive or flush it. Just keep adding if it's low. I've flushed 3 trannys before and each time they break within a couple thousands miles. Something with the detergents that are built in. They break down the gunk that's holding everything together inside. Once that gunk is gone the tranny fails. That's why it is very important to flush the tranny every 60k. But if it's got over 100k it's too late.

Just wait till it breaks on it's own then swap it for a 5-speed.

The amount depends on how much you get out of the tranny. Could be 8qts, could be 18qts if you drain it really good and do the torque converter also.

Also, the E4OD doesn't require Mercon V, any Mercon fluid will work fine. I agree that a synthetic fluid will last longer and keep temps down though. But if you can't afford that at least get a temp gauge to keep an eye on your tranny temps.

But if you transmission is slipping it's either low on fluid, or it's about to go out.

I drained and filled mine a few hundred miles before I ditched it. I got 16 quarts out. That was draining the pan and torque converter. If your TC is stock then it should have a drain plug which makes it super easy. You can turn the flywheel with a big daddy flathead screwdriver but I just had the woman bump the key with me under it looking for the plug. Your owners manual calls for Mercon, equivalent, or higher. So yeah you can put Mercon V in it but not necessary. I put 16 back in and it read full. Pretty much no one on here is going to endorse Lucas products. Best advice that I'll just second...ditch the E4OD auto-slug. You may want to just wait on the maintenance and save the money for a rebuild, upgrade, or 5 or 6 speed because unfortunately the E4OD is most likely going to fail.

seems no one likes the E4OD here, problem is, my line of work, auto is almost needed, or I will be doing a lot of clutches. I pull scrap metal out of groves/woods/weeds, and I do not like to dig trenches spinning tires, or wearing on the clutch that much. BUT if it needs a new tranny one day, I will price up a 5 speed swap. The ATF in there now just smells bad, and could use a change. I will price up the best stuff I can afford, and yes, I do the pull one line off and run engine thing.

Don't start feeling like just because it's an E4OD it's junk, it isn't! They certainly do have their fair share of problems though!! But if it is working fine, change your fluid and drive that truck!!!! There are uses for the auto and the manual tranny, but when it comes down to it, the manual is just harder to tear up.

Yeah man. The E4OD when in top shape is very strong. When it comes to the OBS 7.3s as a whole and how incredibly great they are the weak link always seems to fall on the E4OD. With the stock manual systems it seems like the factory dual mass flywheel is destined to fail. Either way do what works best for you and take the advice with a grain of salt. And I forgot to add this earlier.
Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles
You can do it like I said earlier but if your ATF smells bad then get it all out. Someone on here said, maybe Mark, that burned fluid's chemical make-up has been altered and it won't mix with good fluid nor will it lubricate very well, if at all.

Nope, I didn't say that. It is a good idea to get as much burned fluid out as possible.

I got 5 gallons of Valvoline Mercon rated ATF. I don't have the original manual, but I hope this will work!!
