Appreciate you all sharing this information. Still figuring out my new / old truck and just learned the FE block is a swap from the 400 it originally came with (so much for the "it's an early '77 story...). Wish I had the extended tag, but it disappeared long ago with the original engine.

1. On the top of the frame, passengers side, right behind the axle. I actually find using a putty knife followed by a wet cloth is better than a wire brush for clearing away residue and seeing this number accurately.
2. On the top of the frame under where the passengers seat is. You need a mirror, a prayer, and at least 2 beers to have any luck seeing this one.
3. If your truck is unmolested, there should be a tag attached (via a screw) to the top, engine-side of the firewall. This tag has the VIN and some of the extended information.
4. On the bottom front of the bed (where the bed meets the cab under the truck) there is a similar tag to the one located on the engine-side of the firewall.
Once you have verified the actual VIN of the vehicle, if that matches the VIN on the VIN tag / warranty plate, all your extended information is right on that tag. The extended info can be decoded at www.fordification.net/tech/vin.htm or by many of the folks on this forum. If not, take the actual VIN and go to Marti Auto Works - Concourse Quality, Hobbyist Price and order a basic report ($18) using the VIN and the decoded VIN info. The basic Marti report will give you all the standard and extended VIN info as well as a list of all options that the truck came with. While some people say these reports are not reliable in certain instances, I was able to verify everything the seller of my 73 told me when he sold me the truck and able to verify everything that I was personally seeing on the truck.
