The 87 sending unit will plug in to the 86 wiring harness, but the gauge in the cab will read backwords, ie when the float is up the gauge will read empty. At least that was the case when I tryed to use a sending unit from a 89 in my 85.

So would reversing the leads that feed the signal into the gauge fix that?
dave a 89 would be 7.3 the 87 sending unit came out a 6.9 so i think they should work cause i know the 7.3 have a driftrent gauge but i think the 6.9 was the same
When I checked the two sending units with an ohm meter, they were backwords. I don't remember which was which, but one read the high ohm when the float was in the full position, and the other read high ohms in the empty position.
all you gotta do is hold the sending unit in your hand, plug it in and plug the front plug to the harness.... turn your key on and move the float by hand. take 5 minutes to see exactly whats up.
