Do those on the '51 cars use inside nubs, or outside nubs? They do look virtually the same.

Both my wheels and 'caps are off later vehicles -- not the same one, I got the wheels at the boneyard and the 'caps off a local. The guy I bought the 'caps off was building a '36 PU, kind of a rat rod, told me they were off a later truck, but maybe he was wrong about their origin. They certainly do look like those in the eBay ad.

Those eBay-style caps come in stainless or chromed steel; 3 of mine are chrome, one is SS. Aside from looking a little different (SS is a little less "brilliant"), the chrome ones really get nasty inside.

Cars started using the outside nubs in '49, while trucks continued to use the inside type. I think the guy you got the caps from was definitely mistaken about their origin. 70's-80's truck caps looked like these...

Quick update ... I contacted Early Wheel again for the specifics related to the run of hubcaps. Jason still had not heard back from the fabricator so he asked that I call back on Friday. I will post again once I have more info.

Finally got word back from Jason at Early Wheel. The company he uses for the stamping won't budge on the minimum of 100 units. We were hoping to get a reduced run of 40 to 50.

Hate to say it, but it does not look like we are going to be able to pull this off.

Sorry for any inconvenience...

Fred,

Try this, post a poll with heading something like "Original style F-1 hubcaps for newer rims". There might be some people who might be interested who haven't stop in on this thread. 100 caps is only 25 buyers. Post on some other boards like the HAMB, Vintage Truck and the Ford Barn just to see if there is some interest. It will be like doing free marketing for Early Wheel but if you want a set you may have to go the extra mile. Make sure to make it clear you're not going to organize the buy but that those interested could contact Jason and let it up to him to collect name and see if there is enough interest to make a run.

Good luck,

Bob

I have a few 70's Ford pickup wheels laying around, so I find this interesting. Must've missed this thread back then. Anyhow, I have a set of flat faced, Ford lettered hub caps that came off of a '74 F100 2wd. They are painted white. The bigger caps, like what 52-Merc showed, are the 70's type typically found on Lariat/Explorer trim packages, IIRC. (Early Bronco caps fill up the whole wheel, but are different than shown) Those ones you have, Ross, are interesting in their own right, and I would guess are 50's like mentioned.

Those are beautiful! Are those 10-1/8 ID hubcaps? If so, where did you get them? Thanks, Steve

Thanks , many hrs. & $$ went into transforming the old stock rusty wheels into these works of art .Eventually these will be rolling on the stock which has been under const . for 2 1/2 yrs.See thread entitled =wheel and tire metamorphisis .

The caps are the original style type made for the stock wheels with the inner nubs .May paint the FORD on the caps red same as body color =Vermillion .Acquired these from SVF .
