V10 piston slap?

Hi all,
I'm new to the v-10 and basiclly any newer ford engine. I have had many 400's, 351's 360's 460's ect. pre 1980. i love my old 1978 f150. any how i have a 05 excursion with the v10, it has a knock at startup last maybe 5-10 seconds. it sounds like a light knock harder then a valve click and softer then a rod. I also had a 2001 chevy silverado with the 5.3 v8 that sounded exsatly the same that has done it for 7 years and never been a issue and chevy claimed it was from the Piston skirts being to short and caused a slap in which i have seen several of those 5.3's go over 200k miles w.o a break down due to piston slap. My question is if any of you know that maybe the v10 has a similar issue and if i should be concerned. i do know it has a exsauste leak tick but other then that it sounds like its in between a rod bearing and lift or valve tick. Any info would help thanks for your time.

The earlier 5.4's and some v-10's had piston slap issues but not the later ones.
If it was mine I would fix the exhaust leak first.
Depending on your mileage ,then I would look at all the cam followers.there were a few that had them become loose.
Tell us what kind of oil and filters you are using.
After i hear what your using ,we can give some more advice.
Certain filters have crappy anti drain back valves.

The V10 needs a oil filter with a good anti drain back valve to keep the oil up in the motor so it's best to stay with a Motocraft filter. Our V10 has had a tick on start up from day one 9 years without any problems, I think it's a lifter (cam follower) that drains down after sitting. I just makes noise for a couple of seconds and then I never here it again until the next time it sets and I start it up.

Whats really funny is my other V10 work truck never made a sound but burned a quart of oil every 2K from new, it had 100K on it when I sold it and it still burned the 1 quart. The V10 I still have (play truck) doesn't burn oil but it makes noise at start up with 93K.

Mine has 137k miles on it. has the motocraft oil filter on it. The tick is happening 24/7 while running, but a difirent one for a few seconds on start-up, only when sitting over night, if u restart it once warm it doesn't do it, its on a fresh oil change at the moment. What i thought was exaust leak tick may be that spark plug issue i have been reading about so im going to check that out today. Thanks for the help and still looking forward to seeing any other ideas

o and using 5w-30 oil. winter soon here tho i am thinking of going to a 10w-30 for high mileage. i used to run 10w-40 in my older ford trucks w/o and issue, is it wise to do that with a newer engine? even tho it has a few miles on it?

If you guys even suspect or know you may have an exhaust leak, fix that first. A tech at a well know Ford Truck dealership around here told me my valves might be sticking. Turns out it was only some leaking manifolds that led me to put on a good Banks header and muffler unit.
