I just had a replacement engine (5.4) put in my '02 Screw and I have this tapping/knocking noise under light to moderate load. Sounds like a lifter but more internal. Is this piston slap?
I've tried to research this 'til my face is blue and it seems to be the concensus that this is a relatively common issue that has minimal damage other than to your sanity.
How can I quiet this? I tried going to 10w-30 from 5w-20 and it was slighty quieter but still present. Will synthetic oil help or maybe even a different weight? I'm open to anything suggestions.
I know a ping vs. a metal to metal tap/knock and its not a ping. It happens mostly when cold but still occurs when hot. It's doesn't completely go away but does get a little quieter but I want it to be almost silent.
its obviously not piston slap or it would happen ALL the time. lets go down the list..
crank bearing
wrist pin
etc etc etc
and by the way, my trucks ping sounded like a thrown rod under load. i was looking for new motors when one day i threw some octane booster in the tank and it went away.

try some booster. what do you got to loose?
It does happen ALL the time, but sometimes it gets slightly quieter. I'll give octane booster a try and see what happens.
As mentioned, piston slap is common, but goes away once warm. What is sounds like to me is the also very common broken exhaust manifold studs and an exhaust leak.
OR... something thats kinda easy to get to if your good with a wrench or two, is the timing chain tensioner(s). if your brave enough, find a camshaft timing mark diagram, and tackle that thing. WARNING: the 5.4 is an interference motor!

What do you mean by interference motor? I don't think I have the time or patience to deal with taking off the timing cover.

"Interference engines" are engines designed to such close tolerances that, should the cam timing go too far out of adjustment, due to a broken chain/belt/gear, that the pistons will smash into the valves.
"Non-interference engines" (like the 4.9/300 cu. in. "Big Six", in the the '87 - '96 trucks) do not do this. The pistons will not hit the valves, even when out of time.
