I have a 01 Sd with V10, all stock with 76000 miles. Owned this about five months, but now that it has gotten colder i notice at cold startup i have a slight engine knock till it is warmed up a little. Almost sounds like an old chevy big block piston slap. Is this something to worry about, or am i just being kinda fussy? Any thoughts????
What oil filter are you using ?and weight oil ?
Some filters have bad drain back valves.
Different oils have been known to cause this.
It could just be mileage and piston slap as you think also .
Also not knowing the vehicles past maitenance ,is a concern also.

It was well covered, a few years back, that the V10 and the other modulars were prone to piston slap.
It's a non-destructive piston slap (unlike the Chevy issue).
My '97 4.6L in the Cougar has a touch of it - done it since day one, no worse after 9 years.
Experiment with different types of oil, maybe try 5W30, some here on FTE (4 years ago) had some success with quieting it down. I THINK Mobil 1 was one solution, but can't be sure.
I have had a knock at start up since day one. I have only used Motorcraft filters and tried Mobil 1 for two oil changes and the knock was still there. I just use Motorcraft 5W20 now.
I got rid of a 2001 GMC 6.0L with the destructive piston slap for a 2003 6.8L non-destructive piston slap.
My current version of piston slap only stays for 5-10 seconds compared to 10-20 minutes on the GMC.
sounds like the reason my boat no longer has the gm 4 banger and now has a 1.7 liter 120 hp tdi cumapart. piston slap right out the side of the block at 40 hours and 2 months out of warrenty.
