MPG Question
Any body done any mods to improve gas milage? I get about 18 on the highway 14 or so in town. My wife with the lead foot gets about 12.5 city. I have a 2007 EL 2wd. Had the "clunk" in the transmission when stopping and took it in a couple of weeks ago for the fix and it works great now.

pretty much nothing, but driving it smartly and keeping the maintenance up
you can get it some custom programming for the ECM. Will run you about $500. It will give you way better HP/TQ gains, and you should see MPG gains if you keep your foot out of it.
but $500 for a tiny MPG gain isn't economical...unless of course you want the performance gains, and the MPG's is how you justify it to the wife.

btw, even with custom tuning and every bolt-on in the world...we are only talking about maybe a 1 mpg gain. nothing world changing. The Expedition is just too heavy.
conversely, with my Mustang and similar mods, I could see gains of up to 3 MPG and 30-40 HP.
but it also wieghs 1/2 the weight of the Expy, with almost identical HP/TQ values

I am actually in conversation with Mike from 5 star tuning right now looking for support for my 2010. Looks promising.
Just google 5 star tuning, it is the first link. Search around this forum (more so in the F150, super duty sections) and you will find testimonials. I am seeing V10 guys go from 7mpg to 10mpg with just the economy tune.

I have noticed on my 07 EL that it is very important to use a light foot around town. My mileage seems to go down hard when you go too deep in first gear, that 4.17 is just to start the momentum. I would like to see some lockout for first, other than a manual shift for that very light town driving. Even 2nd gear is in the 3's, which is way lower than anyother FoMoCo automatic I have driven in the past. I have tried a 2nd takeoff in easy traffic and it works very well (.02) except it requires manual shifting on up from there. Yes, I am very well aware just how heavy these things are.
I'm thinking (see if anyone else agrees with me) that the enrichment starts at a fairly small drop in manifold vacuum, so the light foot is very important. It was/is hard for me to let the soccer moms in their mini vans (you know the type) go ahead and run on off at the lights.
I have never run the actual numbers for mpg, just used the display, but it seems to me that (for some reason) any prolonged idling makes that avg go to *** in a handbasket. Since the processor does a running average, you wouldn't think idling would have that big an effect, but it seems that way to me. Thats my story and I am stickin to it
