studder on accleration

My truck is 09 fx4 5.4L with 3.73 and 157" wheelbase. Max tow. 18 inch wheels. So here is the problem. When the truck is at a dead stop and I go to accelerate it has a pretty noticeable studder. Also I have had a few hard shifts from the tranny. Only 1300 miles on it. The studder only happens when the truck tries to accelerate from a dead stop or a very slow rolling start but it does it everytime. If the truck is moving like 5 mph and I accelerate it doesnt seem to do it. The tranny has had a few questionable shifts but seems to be ok for the most part. One time it tried to go into 3rd at a slow enough speed that the truck lunged forward. I drive a e250 5.4 overdrive for work and that thing shifts almost perfect. My peronal truck just seems to have something a little off in the tranny or torque conv. The motor and tranny dont seem to be really working together as well as a brand new truck should be. Is this a common problem with these trucks. The rough shifing is very intermitent at best but the studdering start never fails.

Any advice would be much apperciated. I want to take it into the dealer soon but im dredding the run around so I trying to get as much info about it before i do that. Thanks

You are not the only one. There are a couple of other threads that talk about this, some have said that the truck needs to be driven and it will learn your driving habits. My truck now has 11+K miles on it and it still does it. I guess, as I said in another thread, I have a dumb truck, it has not learned how I drive. I was thinking that since there are some many talking about this shudder in transmission that Ford has looked at this and maybe there is a software update to remove this roughness. Chris

I've noticed a similar slightly hard shift going from 1st-2nd gear and a feeling of a slight lunge forward when braking and the tranny is downshifting to 2nd/1st. I drive the 4.6L 3V with the 3.73LS with 900 miles and will give it more time to "learn" but I won't wait long before I have it looked at.

Four to five smoking burnouts fixes it right up.

Same truck and engine here and I have noticed the lunge when braking but haven't noticed the shudder or strange up shift. I'll have to look for it now.

I have a 2010 Lariat and havent experianced the lunge yet (<500 miles so far). I think this is due to the engine down shifting to assist the brakes with stopping. My wifes 2007 toyota camry SE does it and it is 100000 times worse than my F150. Hers feels like it is actually fighting against the brake pressure that I am applying.

Are you suggesting the braking system is calling for the tranny to downshift?
