What Transmission Is It?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Aug-02 AT 02:49 PM (EST)]It is a 4spd OD trans. You will have the normal P-R-N-D-2-1 on the shifter and a OD button on the dash to the right of the steering column.
If you don't have this button it is more than likely a C-6 3spd auto with no overdrive.

The transmission sellector has 3 postions and the third is OD. An O with a Large D around it and it definately shift into overdrive.
I'd sure like to have one of those tranys behind my '78 460.
The guy that has it say that he bought it now and nothing has been change on it.
He was $3000.00 for it. it has 125,000 miles on it.

It just doesn't have a manual linkage to shift to 3rd. My "DOD Garage Experiment" has the same idea behind it. The two low gears and OD can be selected hydraulically or manually, the third gear only through the hydraulics/electronics themselves. It exists, but may not give you the option if you want it there. Some E4OD's have push button OD's (on the shifter) to put it into 3rd and some don't. You place the tranny into the OD and make sure the light on the shifter says "off." Then it's now in 3rd or "drive." Reduces the number of moving parts..I guess.

I think you may have answered my question. I was considering installing one of these later model OD transmissions behind the 460 in my '78. I pull a 19' bass boat and wanted to be able to shift to 3rd while pulling. it doesn't sound like I'll be able to do that with the transmision I was looking at. Thanks!

EVERY E4OD has a push button to cancel overdrive. The first few years the buton was on the dash, and all the later years it's on the end of the shifter.
AODs did not have a button to cancel overdrive, but this is not an AOD. The AOD was never mated to the big block engines.

That's what I thought.
I am beginning to wonder if maybe this is not a 460 powered truck he is talking about.
