I have a 04 F-250 SD with the Powerstroke 6.0l diesel. I just started to hear a squeal when the truck starts. I thought it might be the serpentine belt but that is fine. I just started to occasionally experience what i thought was the tranny slipping at about 60mph. However just had the tranny flushed and everything seemed OK. The mechanic thought it could possibly be my turbo sticking ? Is this a common problem ? Does this sound like a turbo issue? As well is removing and replacing the turbo an easy process?
it only squeals for a second on start up. I was thinking it could be a vane or something rubbing on start up. Once the motor is warm and i restart i dont get the squeal. Do you have any other ideas on what it could be making the squeal?
it could still be the belt. if your vanes were sticking you would notice while driving down the road with the engine under a load. it would occasionally shudder for a second and spit out some black smoke.
I just replaced the turbo in my 2006 6.0L King Ranch huge pain in the *** but once it is done you feel pretty satisfied. What ever you do keep in mind bigger is not alwase better. make sure you really research your turbo before you buy.
Belt tensioner weak?
Idler pulley or idler bearing?
A turbo aint squeeking only at startup and if it does, catastrophic failure is not far behind. A vane touching the shaft at 100,000 RPM is going to do some damage and make some serious noise....
The turbo "will" make a chirp during start up as it is the vanes moving into the idle position. My turbo has done this since I first received it and 48K with no damage or problems. It only chirps for a fraction of a second and then goes away. If it gets louder have it checked out otherwise don't worry with it.
