quick survey..auto v.s. 5 or 6 speed tranny?
i traded my 1996 f-150, 300-I-6, xlt, reg cab, 8' bed, 5-speed, for a 2005 f-150 lariat s/crew 5.4 auto. i looked for 18 months to find a 2004-2007 f-150 s/crew or ext-cab with a 5.4l-v8 with a 8' bed or even a 6' bed with a 5 or 6 speed and all i have to say is IMPOSSIBLE! just want to know if i am the only one who desires this combo? i know i would be one of the first to trade off on this. just a question

8' bed is only available in the Heavy Duty version. Can get with Standard cab, or the extended cab only.
5 speed is only available in the XL V-6 truck. not with V-8.
sorry man, but sticks aren't popular anymore...so it went bye bye. not to mention the auto tranny has a higher tow capacity in the small truck and 1/2 ton category

Of course you are not the only one that desires this combo. You get all of us who want it together and we could all contact Ford at the same time and they would still not offer that option.

It's hard to get a manual these days as it's hard to find a way that the manual outdoes todays highly intelligent and controlled Autos. Even towing the auto's are outsmarting the users of their manual couterparts, though some people "feel" they know which gear the truck should be in.
I believe alot of the surge by the manufacturers was to get people to accept the high revving mod engines. People that were used to what they had, low rev, low torque curve motors, just wouldn't run them where they need to be for power, the 3,000RPM range.

i just tought more people would want the 5-speed version. during my shopping experance alot of the dealers around here said 5 years ago they sold stick trucks for about $1500 less than auto's but now they are selling them fo more than auto's because of the lower number that have a stick and the number of people that still want them.

If we're talking about Fords, that's a ridiculous statement. Like the man said, the manual is only available in the base XL V6. I got my 2007 for $15000 out the door. You can't find any new one with auto that even starts that low. I would not have chosen the manual but wanted the low-priced truck, since it doesn't get much use (two years old on 1/2 and it only has 5500 on it). Having a manual trans means you don't get to drink coffee, eat a biscuit, talk on the phone and feel up your girlfriend while driving - something has to go. I dropped the biscuit and lost 30 pounds to boot! Sounds to me like you do need a 250 or higher if the manual trans/V8 is available in those. The manual trans with the V6 is made by Mazda and so far seems to be flawless in mine. I saw the ratios posted somewhere and Reverse was higher than 1st gear, which I had suspected as I back it up my steep drive when returning home. It was my feeling that reverse should have been a little lower, but that's splitting hairs. 3rd gear gets the most use around town and accelerating onto the freeway. Once you get on the road in 5th gear, the fuel mileage starts to get good. The V6 has plenty of power and likes to wind up. All in all it's a pretty good package.

i was talking the 1997-2003 models with the 4.6-5-speed combo cheaper than the 4.6-auto combo. i seen it first hand on the lot a 2001 with a 4.6 5-speed vs. a 2003 4.6 auto, milage about the same around 75xxx and the 2001 was $1500 more same trim package for both. i just wanted a newer truck.

Hey guys let me give you all my own experience ..
I had a 04 fx4 150 w/5.4 auto I loved that truck! A salesman talked me into trading this past may . I drove away in my new 08 f-250 sd as pictured. this truck has the manual shifter with manual lockouts 5.4.
I dont like it as much as my old 04 fx4.. first off its not near as snappy as the fx4 nor is it as much fun to drive. Im in the construction business so im always on the phone-drinkin coffee-trying to write job addresses and shift gears at the same time BIG PAIN IN THE BUTT! Now dont get me wrong it does what i expect from it. If i had to do it over again I would get the 250 Automatic the towing capacity is 1000 lbs more by the way.
