First oil change in my SuperDuty

This will be the first oil change I have done in my F250 since I got it in May so I went to Carquest and got 5 quarts of oil and an oil filter. My first question is about how many quarts does a 5.4 hold? And should I get a Motorcraft oil filter rather than a Carquest? The # on the Carquest filter is 85372. The truck is a 2000 F250 5.4.
Thanks guys.

With a filter you will need 6 qts of oil and , although most folks on here would recommend that you use a motorcraft filter, you should be just fine with about any filter as long as it is the correct one for your engine. I've always used fram on my 2001 5.4 and never have any problems.

Did my first oil change today on my 08, surprised the new engine now holds 7 qts? I do like the Motorcraft 20w-50 syn - not a bad price at all.

Your motor won't seize today from using a Fram filter but I challenge you to find a cheaper/poorer quality filter anywhere. There are plenty of sites attesting to the poor quality of Fram filters. Here's one (an older report) that I found quickly: Oil Filters Revealed - MiniMopar Resources

1st meant to say 5w-20 - sorry.
Carquest filters are good, never heard any complaints and used to use them in all changes.

I's stay away from the Fram oil filters for a few reasons...the main reason is poor quality inside cap that blows off then flows inbypass mode.

I really like the new Mobil 1 0w-30 w/ a motorcraft filter.

I use Motorcraft filters, as some filter companies use different inlet and outlet ports that don't quite match up with what Ford designed.

The Ford modulars call for a Motorcraft FL-820S - the "S" is the silicon anti drainback valve.

The Fram filters that use the silicon antidrainback valve are much different internally than the standard PH2.

i use carquest filters on my grandmothers car, i believe (dont hold me to it since filters manufactors vary by car makes) the carquest are made by Wix. same filter you would get at napa in most cases.

as for a problem with them, never had one.

for my ford i'll stick with the motorcraft filter since it is the best for the price, 3.48 at your local walmart (if you have a walmart near you). But a carquest red or blue line filters will be just fine. just for a reference the carquests blue line filter ($6.xx) is close to the cheap motorcraft filter.

but have others have said, NEVER spin a fram on to your engine. i found the hard way when i would get a dry start every time till i ditched them.
