new dpf 1800 miles from home
well, after my hometown for service dept told me that my pitch black tailpipes and no regens checked o.k., i took off from northern arizona to the pensacola florida area. out of shreveport, la, i saw a huge mpg drop but no regen message. the mpgs did recover after about 20 miles. just outside of crestview, fl, i saw light blue/grey smoke billowing out of the tailpipes when i accelerated.
took the truck into the ford dealership the next day. told them my tailpipes were pitch black and there was smoke during acceleration and i thought my dpf was bad. i asked the svc. advisor if there had been many problems with the dpf's and he said no that he had only replaced one.
got a call 4 hrs later and was told they could see the crack in the dpf!!!!!
they had to overnite the dpf in from atlanta and later the next day i was on my way back to arizona.......just in time because hurricane faye is on the way. i did ask the service advisor whey the dpf cracked and he said it just happens and there is no reason. since i was 1800 miles from home, i wasn't going to argue with him but i have a feeling somebody at ford knows something.
for those of you with sooty/black tailpipes, beware if you travel

I've had mine blow the smoke from time to time, usually during take off. It's also done a real bad knock when started a couple of times but much to my despair they say nothing wrong cause when I get it in it won't reproduce the issue and they can't diagnose it. One day I hoping to have a video camera when it does it and I can show them. It's a crying shame that a 45K $$$ truck and I have to plan on carrying a video camera. Go figure, but I do love the big hunk of steel!
