I have a 08 F250 CC 4X4 PSD its a job 1 with 24000 miles I got the truck about a month ago and love it. I took the truck in and had the recent flash done for the PCM ,TSB for the belt chirp & yes the radiator was replaced. These things I new about before I bought the truck but hey new model will have some glitches right. My question is this since the reflash was done I now know when the DPF regens and when its done, write after the regen the truck has great pick up and pulls anyting I have with ease "about 5000 lbs" but within less than 100 miles after the regen the truck gets slugish and does not respond well. The boost goes up fine no abnormal noises from the motor but the truck just looses some of its power until the next regen at about 200 miles. After the next regen the truck is back to normal and working fine, I have read some posts about the soot on the tailpipes mine is covered with it, solid black. Is it possible the DPF is damaged from the previous owner and needs to be replaced.
Black soot in the tail pipes is almost certainly a result of a cracked DPF but before returning to the dealer I would suggest cleaning out the tail pipes really well. Drive it a week or 2 and see if the tail pipes get covered in soot again. These trucks should not have any significant soot in the tail pipe at all but in your case you need to see if the latest flash fixed it already. And/or, the previous owner may have already had a DPF replaced but didnt clean the pipes. For all you know the previous owner ran a programmer w/o the DPF and when he returned it to stock he never thought to clean out the tail pipe.
Since the past is unknow, clean them up and build your own history. The more information you can give the dealer the easier it is for them diagnose/repair your truck. In some cases the DPF just goes bad. In other cases there is another problem that caused the DPF to fail.
will the dealer even replace the DPF i have heard that the DPF is considered a maintence item like brake and Ford will charge you 1000 bucks to replace the filter. I dont have one on my 6.4L but thats what ive been hearing
Yes its a warranty item if you are in the 3/36 period and according to my dealer the DPF is $1,700. Im sure that price varies somewhat but its definitely expensive.
The DPF is supposed to be cleaned or replaced at some point. I forget the exact mileage now but its something like 100k. About the same as what a cat converter would be.
Moyerboy, if you remember where your DPF "fell off" you may want to hang on to it.
I cleaned the pipes 2 weeks ago and the soot is already returning probably a bad DPF I will take it in and have them look at it, my dealer seems to be working with me pretty well on these issues, as for the programmer I bought the truck under the ford certified used claimer they should have been able to read if it had a programmer or not shouldn`t they I thought ford had sensers and software to detect a programmer
A new DPF is good for about 150,000 miles. It will have to be replaced with a rebuilt or cleaned DPF to get rid of the ash build up. The ash is a byproduct of burning out the soot during regenerations.
The mileage for replacement can be less if you don't use ULSD fuel, Non CJ-4 low ash oil, Bio fuel over 5%, etc. Ever time you Regenerate, you create ash that will ultimately fill the DPF. The rebuilt DPF installed at about 150,000 miles will have to be replaced with a new one around 280,000 miles. A new PDF can cost $1700.00 so don't rush the replacement time. You will get a Check Engine Light On when the time arrives to clean or replace the DPF.
Black soot inside the tailpipe indicates a defective DPF..period... It is a warranty item, It will most likely NOT throw a code. Many dealers have no clue .. You can not tell by looking at it from then outside. The black tailpipe IS the outside indication. Keep pressing the dealer till they become educated on how to identify a defective DPF.
If a programmer /chip is involved all bets are off.
ok i heard that from some one so idk but when the can feel off caprang i left it on the side of the road ill get some pics up on here as soon as i get a nice day when its not snowing
they educated me about the pitch black soot in my 6.4 f350's tailpipes being caused by a defective dpf, and my truck only had approx. 2500 miles on it! i took the truck to my local dealer and they said they tested it and the dpf was NOT defective and in working order.
1800 miles from home after some grey smoke and lousy acceleration, i found a dealer that replaced my dpf under the warranty. they even told me they saw the crack in the dpf!!!
don't get bullied by ford. look at other 6.4 psd's and their clean tailpipes and then look at your truck's pitch black tailpipes.
good luck to you and hopefully you won't have be 1800 miles from home to find a dealer that will get your truck's defective dpf replaced.........
