I have had an issue on my 2008 F250 (26k miles) for about the last 6 months, black smoke and build up on the exhaust. 6 months ago i took it in and they said nothing was wrong. There was a little smoke after a regen but just prior to the regen it was pretty heavy. Over the next few months it continues to get worse. I took it back in last week and they said it was a bad injector and replaced injector#7. When I picked it up I asked if they test drove it and checked the DPF to make sure no more black smoke was being produced and they said yes everything checks out and I am good to go. I drive away from the dealership and I am still blowing black smoke every time I hit the gas pedal. I take it back demonstrate it for the advisor and technician and now they are replacing injector#1 and the DPF.
I have dealt with this dealership for 12 years, last 7 years with the same advisor. I have never had a problem but now I am a little pissed because I would assume they just flat out lied to me about test driving and checking the DPF. Nothing possibly could have changed that quick that would now make the DPF and another injector need to be replaced.
This being my first diesel, is it common for injectors to go out?
Am I correct that these would be covered under the 100K mile engine warranty? (for future reference)
It was a 2 day process the first time, and they had it 2 days this time to determine that another injector needs replaced as well as the DPF, it will take monday and tuesday to make the repairs and "retest". Is it really the much work to figure this out?
I have cooled of a little since they gave me a rental, but it seems like someone is dropping the ball here.
Remember that lots of black smoke means that the engine is running rich, and that one of the easiest ways for this to happen is to have a bad injector putting too much fuel into the cylinders. So the soot and smoke is an indicator that it's getting too much fuel, so that's where they're going to start.
Secondly, injectors shouldn't be a common problem, but like anything else they can go bad. My 6.4L truck only lasted 15,000 miles before it was totalled, but I've seen many FTE member go a LONG way on the original injectors. One of the members here, ruschejj, had over 150,000 miles on his '08 when he traded it in, and he never had any injectors replaced.
Honestly I wouldn't let this get to you. The federal government's emissions requirements make these trucks insanely complex, which means there's lots more to go wrong. Glad to hear your truck is running good again!
