Oil Change

Hearing a lot of mixed views when I should get my 1st oil change. I have heard around 5000 miles and I've heard around 10000 miles. Also would you guys recommend doing it at Ford, a francise lube place, or yourself. Thanks in advance for the input.

What did your dealer recommend? I had my dealer do the first one at 3500 on my 6.0 just so they could check everything out for the first time. I wouldn't go more than 5000 on the first one.

The Ford website Genuine Ford and Lincoln Mercury Parts & Service says under "normal" condition oil changes are every 10K (7.5K for gas engines)
If you do any of the following it is every 5K. (gas and diesel)
1. tow a trailer or using a camper or car-top carrier
2. Extensive idling and/or low-speed driving for long distances as in heavy commercial use such as delivery, taxi, patrol car or livery
3. Operating in dusty conditions such as unpaved or dusty roads
Off-road operation

I would not trust the dealer they will recomend more frequent service than necessary just like all the oil change places that still use the 3000 mile rule.

How are you using the truck?
This is right out of the book

Severe Service Operating Conditions
Change Engine oil and Filter every

5,000 miles<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
3 months <o></o>
250 gallons of fuel<o></o>
200 hours (whichever comes first)
**Severe Service Conditions Include**
Towing a trailer over 1,000 miles
Sustained, high speed with maximum load
Frequent, extended idling
Operation in severe dust conditions
Frequent, short trips of 10 miles or less during freezing weather.

5,000 miles is a good number to use for an oil change. Fuel filters every 10,000 due to the poor quality of diesel fuel. Treat the fuel with a Cetane/lubricity improver to insure the fuel is at least 45 Cetane. Do not disturb the filter box until it's time to be changed. Use the "Filter Minder" gauge on the air box to determine time for a change. Under highway use the filter should last for 60,000 to 70,000 miles. Use only Motorcraft Gold coolant. Other coolants do not mix well. Anytime you have someone change oil insist on the Motorcraft OEM filters. If they can't provide them...bring your own. Or, you can go back to a Ford dealer. Shop around. Oil change prices vary dealer to dealer. I've seen them from 79.99 to 129.00 Good luck.

I did my first @6200 or 6800 miles. Dealer did 2nd (I have ESP for 100k) @10,000. 3rd @ 15k, 4th dealer @21k

My service guy said 10k but Marcussen hit it on the head in his post. I also have the FS2500 bypass filter which keeps my oil much cleaner. Pricey, but I recommend it.

I would say stay away from a franchise due to personal experience. They hire young guys/girls who don't care and don't do half of what you pay for, (tire check, fluids, vacuum, etc.) Also, they seem to love 10w 40 and I wouldn't doubt they would ignore your diesel oil specs like CJ4

If you are going to pay, do it yourself for $55 or take it to the dealer for $95 No telling what a franchise would charge for your change.

Where did I read that Ford recommends the first oil change at 1,000 miles? Or did I get that from the thread about proper break in procedure?

IMO its not fair to lump all dealers together. My wife has her Taurus X done at the dealer every 4,000 miles. They keep telling her she should wait between 5,000-7,500 to do it but she insists on having it done at 4,000. Same dealer told me every 10,000 miles on my PSD but my warranty says "or 6 months" which in my case happens sooner than 10k miles anyway.

Complete section in the CD that came with 2008 6.4 PSD engines. They list many variables as pointed out above. If you have time, watch the video. It is very informative and in lay man terms.

I did my first change at 2500 miles, the second with 7,500 miles on the truck. After that, it gets an oil change every 7500 miles. I use a Ford quick lube at my local dealer.

My service manager recommended every 5000 miles. Even if I am going to do it my self.

I'm sorry but were you saying something? You might want to change your picture I probably speak for allot of us truck enthusiast, "I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT" but it does distract me just a bit.
