Question Hard starting....

Have a 95 PSD that has recently started giving me problems when starting..first it started out by NOT starting when it had been shut off for only a few minutes..but a shot of starting fluid and it would fire back up..now, it doesn't start at all unless it gets a shot of starting fluid..sometimes it cranks a while..and sometimes I have to apply a little pressure on the foot feed...any ideas?? Thinkin maybe the IPR..have read other posts, and if this is the case, is it a hard job to clean/rebuild it by replacing the O-rings in it? Thanks for your help guys, any help is appreciated!!!

check for fuel pressure while cranking next time it acts up, if thats good then you need a scan tool to see if the ipr has a high duty cycle while cranking. that will tell you if its hp oil related.

ok...

Well, I'll admit, I'm new to working on diesel trucks..what's the best way to check the fuel pressure when cranking it over? And is there a certain about of pressure I should have there? As far as using a scanner to check the ipr, are there any certain numbers I should be looking for when testing it? Like I said, I'm new to working on this truck and don't really know alot about it..unfortunately, I don't have any friends with diesel trucks either..so help from you guys is appreciated!!!!

Thanks for the welcome, Kawa!!

to test fuel pressure there is a schrader valve (tire vavle stem) on the fuel filter housing. Here is a pic with parts labeled

On your starting issue would I be correct in saying it starts fine cold but when warmed up is when you are having your trouble?
If so that is commonly IPR o-rings that are shot. Some times its also injector, injector o-ring or IPR issues but 8 out of 10 times its IPR o-rings.

well...

Well, tjbeggs, it used to do it when the engine was warm..say I'd stop at the store for something quick..but now it does it everytime I try to start it..no matter if it's been sitting over nite or if it's been shut off for 5 minutes...I changed the injector o-rings last fall and I haven't had any problems, up until about 2 weeks ago..it just started doing it...it's driving me crazy, I always worked on my other trucks, but this is my first diesel and it's giving me fits..and the Ford garage isn't much help, guess they figure as a female they can put the screws to me..nuh huh!!! Thanks for the help guys!! Also, thanks for the detailed pic, tj!!

What you describe mark IPR o-rings to a T. first it won't start when warm because the warm oil can't fill the gaps then even the cold thick oil can't do it and you end with a no start always.

ok...

Now the question is, where is the best place to get the rebuild kit for the ipr? I've tried the local AutoValue and Napa stores and no luck..the Ford dealer said yea, but I thought the price they gave me was way too high..I'd read other posts where guys had said it costs less than $50 for the kit..any thoughts? You guys have been helpful and I appreciate it!!

Yeah the Ford kit should be less than $40 unless they are gouging you again! the international dealer will be less yet at around $15 from what I hear.

If your not in a big yank for the truck these guys have what you needs as well
