Question Shift Kit Recommendations

I'm looking into getting a shift kit for my truck. Does anyone have any recommendations? I pull a 14ft enclosed trailer occasionally. Right now when I get on the gas hard it shifts from 1st to 2nd pretty lazy and I want to make it shift harder and crisper.

Today I had a Ford dealer service my tranny... they flushed the fluid and said that there are no problems.

Truck: 1998 F-150 5.4L 4x4 extended cab
Mileage: 150k
Transmission: E4OD

You could go with the B&M shift improver kit, Stage 1 (heavy duty). It costs about 100 dollars.

You may also consider a programmer such as the Diablo Predator that I have in my truck. It allows the transmision shift points, shift pressures and other items that will do what you want with out modify the transmission internally. Good luck!

Looked on the Diablo Predator website, and it looks like they don't have a programmer for my year and model.

Uhhh...are you sure it has the E4OD? I thought the only options in these trucks were the 4R70W and the more rare 4R100?

Take a look at the door sticker. The transmission code is under TR on the label. If you have a U, the transmission is a 4R70W. If you have an E, then you likely have a 4R100. Your truck is not a F-250LD or a 7700 model is it?

The truck is a 1998 F-150 5.4L 4x4..

I just looked under the TR label, it says "E". So I guess I have a 4R100... what does that mean? I swore I thought it was a E4OD for some reason. Hmm... Burnstoughford said they're basically the same.

You may still have a E4OD instead of a 4R100. I was referring to the door tag decoder on this site, which IMHO is a bit outdated. I was guessing that an E code would equate out to a 4R100.

The E4OD/4R100 transmissions are a heavier duty transmission compared to the 4R70W and I would expect to be more durable in towing applications. As for more specifics, or how to tell the difference between the two, that will have to be answered by someone more knowledgable than me. Good luck!

Using this decoder: https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...r_Decoder.html

it says it is a E4OD.

So if I can't get a Diablo Predator, then are there any other programmers you all recommend?

For the B&M shift improver kit, what are you modifying with the tranny?

98 is very limited on options, most start support 99 and up. I am pleased with the Sniper Special forces on my 98 5.4(4r100). A little more complicated tuner that the others. But has a lot more control. And the next stage of tuner will go deep into control. Like pressure at various throttle settings. There are a couple of vendors on the board who can give more info. 2002BLGT(vendor) was able to remove the torque control feature which was BIG for changing the truck. Ford reducing timing during shifts to make them softer. This was causing most of my troubles. not in a hurry for a shift kit now.

For the shift kit. there are Ford specific kits that may do better than a B&M will. I have used TransGo on many other types. (Never done a 4r100). And highly reccomend Transgo over B&M products.
Quick search pulled this one up.
