I think we are talking about something different. We are concerned with the 2-1 shift and the 3-2 shift.
I have been struggling with this linkage as well. I have an Edelbrock 1406, and I bought their linkage kit as well. I don't have a spacer, but I still had to bend the rod a little until it fit. It feels like the truck does not shift gears cleanly. Isn't the original control all spring activated? I think that allowed the lever to snap into either position.
For now I have just disconnected the linkage and installed a ratchet shifter. It really gets in the way on the floor, and I don't like having to use it every time I need to downshift. Plus, even if I move the shifter to 1st, the truck will not downshift until I almost stop.
One of these days, I will put the linkage back in, and try to figure out how to connect it to the throttle linkage using only springs.
