Power Steering Is Whining
Hi all, my power steering on my 1980 F-150 4x4 with a 351M is whining badly, especially when i turn. At an idle, it whines a little bit but when i turn the wheel aroound corners and sitting in parking lots, its extremily loud. I know that i can buy some lucas oil power steering less whine but i dont want to just put it aside, I WANT TO FIX IT, and this leads me and my dad to the question, is the steering box the one that whines, or is it the power steering pump, if yall can, I wil need an answer on which one of these it is and i know this has to happen on some of the ol' fords on this forum. Thanks in advance.

I have read here on FTE that when these ford PS pumps start making noises like this, that it is due to PS pump wear and there are metal particles circulating through the pump. It was recommended to change the PS fluid and also add in a magnetic power steering filter on the inlet side of the pump. I rebuilt my PS pump and added one of these filters to my truck during my frame-off restoration project, but I do not know how well this is going to work yet, since the truck is not any where near finished yet. Here is a link to a picture of my PS setup:
