2004 Explorer Transmission fluid change, need help
#16
again, ther are probably more efficient methods on the steering pump, but what i did was get a suction gun (rose gun) looks like a grease gun with a plastic tube on the end. stick it way down in the pump and suck out what you can. your only get about 2-3 ounces. then i top it off with transmission fluid (Mercon). run the motor for 60 seconds, turning the wheel a back and forth slowly. **** it off, and do it again... i did this aobut 10 times. you only go thru maybe 2 quarts of new fluid so its not too expensive, just takes time. i really did not want to remove the pressure hose and try pumping it into a bucket while filling the cavity. did not look like enough room on the little SUV i was working on.

However, the way I look at it mechanics, in the driveway or at the local shop, have been changing the fluid in automatic, and manual, transmissions for years the old fashion way, and in my few years wrenching I haven't heard of a tranny going bad from old faithful. One last note, I called the dealer to get a price and they wanted $200.00 to hook it up to a machine to flush it and put new fluid in without dropping the pan or changing the filter, I also called a local transmisson shop and they want $85.00 to do it the old fashion way. The only way I would take it to the dealer would be if the transmission had no pan, like my fathers 2001 Escape is. Thanks for the input.
The torque converter does not move till you put it into gear it is true. But the fluid pump should be working, at least it does on the A4LD. On some models, you may have to put the transmission in neutral, since the fluid pump is often run by the TQC.
Under no circumstances should you ever hook the transmission up to a flushing machine.

Important yet overlooked detail
I'm bringing this thread back to highlight an important step in changing the trans fluid that seems to be overlooked, though one poster eluded to the answer. When you fill the trans back up, should the truck be running or not? I put 5 quarts of ATF in my transmission with the truck running and made sure it was completely full. Then, when I turned the truck off (without putting the inner torx plug back in) about 2 quarts dumped out onto my garage floor. I believe leaving the truck running for the whole fill procedure is the correct way to do it, but I'm not sure anybody has explicitly said so. Can I get a confirmation??
