To go with a 255 width and keep the speedometer pretty close to accurate, you'd want to go with a 60 series sidewall. That might look a bit odd on that style of Explorer. And I can't state with any certainty that you would not have issues with rubbing.
I'm looking hard at the General Grabber UHP's in 255/65 16 to replace the 235's on my wife's 2010 2wd.
I was going to go with the the Continentals, but the Grabbers are considerably less expensive, and IMO, will look better on her truck.
Specs are 1) inch wider, same height....bout what I'm looking for.
I have Two 2005 Explores we ran 235>75>16 Tires for years then we went to 255<70<16 tires and they are great MPH is less than 2 MPH off. You must make sure all panels around the front tires are tight. We have over 40K on the tires now they show very little ware.
I just recently went with 255/70-16 Cooper Discoverer AT3's on my 08 ST no rubbing issues at all and we recalibrated the speedo in our shop so it is right on the money! BTW my ST is 2wd
Update...with pics.
Ended up deciding on 255/65's Cooper Discover LSX Plus's. I detoured from the aforementioned Generals for a couple of reasons.
So far, ride is exceptional, quiet, they make the truck look much better and the Bride is happy.
FYI- Out the door for just $700 and a rebate of $50 in the mail..no complaints.
Nothing says "Happy Easter, Dear" like a new set of tires.
