Mass Confusion

Well, I've done it again......I've researched to the point that I confused myself and am worse off than when I begun. LOL Hopefully someone here will be able to help me out.

I have the 4.9L -E4OD combo in my 93 F150. I'm planning to get a chip once I have the rest of the mods done (high-flow cat & exhaust, 19# injector swap, slightly meatier cam, MSD ignition system, custom Ram-Air induction, etc. etc. etc.). In such, here are my questions:

1. Will an off-the-shelf chip do me any good, or will I need a custom programmed one to take full advantage of my other mods?

2. What effect does a chip have on the transmission? I've already installed a TransGo Performance shift kit.

3. What does the chip do for that annoying full-throttle flat spot? I noticed in the new Summit catalog they have a Throttle Control Module that senses when the throttle is 70% open or more and advances the timing, thereby eliminating the flat spot.

4. Is there any DIY software available for programming your own chip? Something where you could just plug your laptop into the system and take readings, then adjust as needed?

I know I'm asking for alot of information, but I'm sure there are others wondering the same things. Lets see what falls out of the tree on this one

OK, not necessarily in order. A stock chip program would do you very little good with the mods you have. You would not be much improved over what you have now, a computer unaware of the mods. Your ecu is operating under the assumption that everything is stock in your truck. There is currently no hardware available from Superchips or Diablo to allow you to write your own programs. Your truck would be greatly improved with a custom program allowing for your mods. We would need to remove the tranny changes from the chip due to your shift kit. Your full-throttle flat spot is caused by the stock ecu, that can be remedied with a custom program.
Hope that I have answered most of your questions.
Thanks
Danny

Thanks D. I'm assuming the performance chips do the same thing as that Throttle Control Module by sensing throttle position and adjusting the timing advance appropriately. Also, what kind of price would I be looking at for a custom programmed chip, and what information would I need to have for the programmer?

Thanks again!!

Custom programming is an additional $125.00 plus the price of the chip. Check the chip price on the online store here. Diablo would not have the programming for your year model truck, it would have to be done by Superchips. Order your chip through Ken here.

Thanks

Mass Confusion

Danny,

I have a 97 F-350 crew-cab powerstroke that has a K@N air filter with no other mods. I do plan on adding a free flowing exhaust and maybe an intercooler. should i wait on purchasing a chip until these mods are done? Does this little bit of modification need custom programming? OH......I forgot to add that i wanted to put a little larger tire on also. maybe 2 inch lift with 35" tires.

Thanks for the info,
mycrew

It would be best to get your mods on then order your chip. Your exhaust system dictates which level chip you can safely install on your 97 model truck. I would also advise installing a pyrometer while doing your exhaust work. The larger tires will only affect the speedo reading in your truck. If you feel that it is worth the custom programming fee to correct the speedo, it can be done.
