1986 Chevy suburban what axles ?

My friend has a 1986 suburban. Anybody have any idea what axles it would have. Its a 4x4, diesel, and the grand serria package. I think its a corporate 10 bolt rear. He says the 3rd members look the similar but I didn't think corporate made front axles. He only wants $1500(I think) for it. The motor has 40K on it but the body is rusted really bad. It has 700R4 trans and NP 208 T-case. I am thinking about buying it to part out.

If it's a 1/2 ton, you're looking at a 10 bolt front end (D44 equivalent) and a 12 bolt rear axle. 3/4 ton is also going to have a 10 bolt front, but with 8 lugs. The rear will either be a 14 bolt (9.5" ring gear) or 14 bolt full floater with a 10.5" ring gear.

Sounds like a 1/2 ton and not worth my trouble. Would a 1/2 ton have a diesel ?

Yep the General put diesels in 1/2, 3/4, and 1 tons. The CUCV Shivvy Blazers I used to occasionally drive when I was in the Marines were 1/2 ton (10 bolt/12 bolt) had the gutless 6.2 diesels in em. The CUCV pickups (SRW 1 ton D60/FF 14 bolt) also ran the 6.2s. Some had TH400 trannies some had TH700R4s all to my knowledge ran the NP208 transfer cases. I know if I were a Chevy guy I would want one of the pickups... why: Any motor will bolt to the tranny, Dana 60 front/ full float 14 bolt rear, 4.56 gears with Detroit lockers in the rear, some trucks had Trac Loks in the front, And the bodies are almost totally rust free... because the US military has them repainted every 2 years! For a mud bogger they would be ideal, they already have gears and lockers, all you need is a lift and tires and you would have one heck of a rig! BTW from what I have seen, most 1/2 ton fullsize GM trucks with the TH700R4 have 3.73 gears especially 4x4s.

I just did a 4x4 conversion on a 1990 Suburban, 700R4 NP208, 14 Bolt and a Dana 44 up front. The 6.2 Diesels are gutless, turbo maybe? it would be pretty easy to switch to 1 ton running gear

Those G.I Joe chebbies are the hot ticket right now. Military surplus stores have them for sale all of the time. They have the right drivetrain, and are exempt from emissions, so fellas are pulling the diesels, and installing 454's, and 502's. For cheap, they have a vehicle with decent stuff, you know, for a chebby. If you are into that sort of stuff.
All this talk about chebbies is making me itch............

Yeah I know my left eye is starting to twitch a little! The worst part is it's cheaper and easier to find bigger lift kits for the 73-87 GM trucks. I can only find one company who offers one for my 77 F250 High Boy... and it's only a 4"

This would be a cool project if somebody is interested I can get you my friends contact info. Only thing understand the body is almost gone its rusted so bad. The 6.2 diesel had a professional rebuild 40K mile ago. The guy that owns it is a corvette nut and take real good care of his stuff.

While the cast iron case, and all gear of the 205 is the most desireable the 208 has a slightly lower low ratio, and because it is aluminum is much lighter than the cast iron cases. Now, the 208 is chain driven aluminum case and has a slip yoke, for rear output, I don't believe that there is a decent kit availabe to convert these to fixed yoke. I have seen these take a pretty decent beating, but do eventually break. If you are looking for a case, the 205 will be the best investment.

Why part it out when you can do something like this
to a Chevy?

Here's my 2 cents... NP203... chain driven/ cast iron, it's overweight junk IMO not any stronger than a 208 and weighs 10 times more. NP 208 chain driven/ aluminum, it's a good all around xcase behind a small block or big six. It's light weight and pretty strong, I haven't seen too many of them torn up. They have an excellent low range ratio. NP 205... king of the hill cast iron housing, gear to gear driven... need I say more?
