Were on the right track...hooray! thanks for the pic's. Now a new question: Will the H/D F250 with the short and Narrow bolt pattern fit in a '1955 F100 pickup?

My guess is a yes.

Conclusion: later model tranny's which have the FORD PATTERN (short & Wide) should now fit where a older T85 tranny used to be. The length of the input shaft should be the same assuming you use a genuine Ford tranny.

Somewhat off topic: Did the T86 w/OD come with more then one bolt pattern. I'm seeing the early Tall & Narrow. Did this change to the Ford Pattern (short & Wide)?

Thanks Ron

Ron, I just went out and measured the two housings. They both measure ~18" center to center, frame mount holes. They both measure ~7 1/4" from engine mount surface to tranny bolt surface. Measurements taken at the top of the housing.
Bell housing for three speed:
Hole where the tranny main drive housing fits is 4 3/4"
Distance between top bolts 5 1/4".
Distance between lower bolts 6 1/4'
Distance between top and lower bolts 7 1/4"

Bell housing for the 4 speed:
5" hole where tranny main drive goes.
Distance between top bolts 8 1/2"
Distance between lower bolts 8 1/2"
Distance between bolts top to bottom 5 3/4"

What "older" T-85 was used in Ford trucks? None that I'm aware of prior to 1965. T-85's are a 3 speed manuals with OVERDRIVE.

Borg Warner T-85 3 speed manual with overdrive: 1942/48 Lincoln & Continental V-12 / 1949/51 Lincoln & Lincoln Cosmopolitan 337 Flathead V8.

Borg Warner T-85N 3 speed manual with overdrive: 1965/67 Galaxie/LTD 352 / 1965/71 F100 240/300 I-6; 352/360/390.

You mentioned these:
Borg Warner T-85N 3 speed manual with overdrive: 1965/67 Galaxie/LTD 352 / 1965/71 F100 240/300 I-6; 352/360/390.
Just to be clear this "quoted group" as far as we can determine may have used the FORD PATTERN (Short & Wide)...true?

And, this includes the "FE" engine group as well as later in-line 6's. Is there a drawing or a picture of this tranny? Perhaps someone out there in Ford land...has evidence. I do see other car manufacturers using the T85. >>> Mercury, Packard, and Studebaker come to mine.

Were talking a "T85 3-speed w/ OD which features the short & wide bolt pattern"
