65-66 bellhousing question

I'm looking for a little info about 65-66 bellhousings. Do they have the mounting ears on them (both automatic and standard transmission)?

Are the 4x4 bellhousings different than the 2wd bellhousing?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

I think that the 65-6 b/hsgs are same both 2 and 4wd....If you are in need I have one needing a new home...but as far as fit goes, I know the 2wd sticks and C/M dont have the ears I recall a friends 64 4X4 having the ears on the bellhsg...and after looking at my illustration book, the 65/6 use the mount at the tail area of the gearbox, the 64 and earlier type are essentially reversed ...1 mount up front and 2 in rear at b/hsg ears....Hope this helps...

Yes the bell housings for the 65-66 trucks do have pin holes, one on each side to aline to the pins on the engine, alease on the FE engines, if that is what you are asking about.

Thanks for the responses. What I was asking about was the ability to mount the engine to the frame using the engine mounts that are on the bellhousing. The 54-64 trucks have this sort of bellhousing.

The 65-66 bellhousing does not have mounts on it. At least thats the way the small bolt pattern goes. I'm not 100% on the FE large bolt pattern set up. Definitly a different housing for the big iron!

No moutings on the 65-66 FE bellhousings. Motor mouts and trasns tail shaft on these trucks, auto and manual.

The 4x4 mounted like the older trucks, at the front timing cover and the bellhousing ears/tabs. The 4x2s started using the motor mounts at the block side and the trans tailshaft.

Thumbs up

I concur 100% with Mike who is exactly right.
Since 4X4s use earlier style frame, they also use earlier style mount set up with the 3 point lay out. However 4X2's do not.

The rear engine mount on the 4X2 would be the transmission rear mount, which sits on an X member early frames & 4X4s do not have.

So 65 & 66's have 2 different types of bellhousings depending on whether they are a 4X2 or a 4X4 truck.

And FWIW. . Bellhousing to block bolt patterns are generally "Engine Family Specific". IOW, a Y block fits a Y Block an FE fits FE & a Windsor fits Windsors (both I-6 & V8s)

One more point . . Generally Truck or commercial bellhousings are cast steel while P-Cars are often alloy. Sometimes the P-Car "thro away" fork hole does not align correctly with the "truck/ commercial" clutch linkage set up. Aside from the misalignment deal. . . with a "Big Engine" set up that makes "power" the use of the alloy Bellhousing could be a disaster in the making. . .

I'm sorry I don't cocur about the 4x4 bellhousing. My 66 F-100 4x4 the bellhousing is the same as the 2wd, no mounts on it. My 68 F350 2wd is the same and so is my son's 66 F100 2wd with auto.

bertha66, I don't see any info about your truck in your profile or gallery. Which engine do you have in the 66? Is it original?

Thanks to all for your responses.

Not to blur this posting anymore, but according to my parts books, up until the end of 1965, the 6cyl and 8 cyl in a 4WD had those mounting ears. In 1966, they changed over to the later style mounts, regardless of 2wd or 4wd.

I'm not sure about the 65 4x4, My truck is a 66 4x4 F-100, the drive train is all original, but the engine. The engine was replaced with a 67 Fairlane GT 390 in 1980, the year after I bought the truck.

If you're saying your 66 has no ears, that what I said. Up till the end of the 65 model year, they used the ears. After that, 1966, they went to the late model type bellhousings in 2wd and 4wd.

I'm sorry Barry, I did not mean to to sound like I was questioning what you said about the 65's. My truck is a 66 F-100 4x4, I do not know any about the 65 4x4. Pcmenten just asked about what my truck had. Allen

I didn't take any offense. The first part of the thread sounded like mass confusion. I was just trying to give a better idea as to when the change was. Ford was never one to make the change exactly when they say it happened. I ran into a ton of that when I was in Ford parts. They would use up most of what they had, then box it for the parts depots. Every time I open these books, I learn something new, and I've been into it since the 70's.
