3 speed Overdrive, 56 F100, 272 V8
I'm looking to save my engine (revs) and gasoline by installing a 3 spd OD trans as the truck originally came with. It currently has a 3 spd non OD trans and 3.92 Dana rear. Great for parades, not great for cruising.
My question is what will bolt up to the bellhousing readily to replace the Borg Warner T 86 (light duty) trans that's in it now. They made the same with OD. I know the drive shaft will have to be modified and thats not a problem. I just want what is easy to do.
I have considered giving up on finding the trans (orig) for it and just getting the Mummert Aluminum bellhousing for the F100 and putting a C-4, then changing the rear gears or replacing the rear end with a Ford 9 in in the right ratio. The manual OD Trans would be simpler. If anyone knows and can help advise I would appreciate it. I'm located in central Texas, just in case someone close knows or has something. hmd_56

The OD transmission for your year truck had the same Ford transmission but had an R-10 Overdrive unit instaqlled on the back of it. The transmission designed for the overdrive unit also had an extra rear hole for an alignment pin.
to install this, yowould have to shorten the drive shaft and probably move the transmission mount back to fit. I believe the transmission you currently have does not have the tail cone fitted to it.
You would also have to find the 4 electrical components for the transmission: Governor, Solenoid, kickdown switch, and relay.
Teh governor and kickdown switch are not voltage sensative - the relay and solenoid are. 12 volt solenoids and relays are gettin gharder to find.
I will post a number of threads we have had abotu swapping out overdrive transmissions. But to be honest with you, your C4 swap out would actually be more simple. and with a 9" rear, you have multiple gear ratio combinations. Rear wheel/tire diameter will play an important factor as well.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I just wish Mummert made a bellhousing for an AOD. That would be the best, least work to just going with an auto, and I'd have the OD to boot. From all the forums I've visited I'm begining to agree with you on just going to a C4 when I make the move. I'm still hoping though. HM
