Hello,

I am looking to purchase a 2000-2003 Excursion with the 7.3 diesel engine.
I will be pulling a 14' enclosed trailer to start but eventually getting a 20-30 trailer. Plan to use it everyday and also for frequent trips across the country.

I found a 2000 with 143K miles for about $15K.

What issues or problems/fixes should I be looking for ?
I thought I heard something about the tranny having a problem in one of these years.

I also found a 2003 with a 6.0 that has 250K miles for about $15K.
I like the fact it's newer but the mileage is really high and everyone says the 6.0's have alot of problems.

I'm trying to stay under $20K total investment.
Figure I'm gonna have to put some money in whatever I get that is used.

What do you guys think ?

I bought my 00 7.3 for $13 w/ 123,000 miles, so $15 isn't a bad price. Mine needed some cosmetic work. All I have done is normal maintenance and replace vac. lines to the front hubs. Oil changes,, alignment, tires,, nothing else. Jim

There's lots of good rigs on Ebay with a lot lower mileage than that and the prices aren't too bad.. I bought my '01 "X" PSD with 82,000 miles for 20K and except for a couple of little issues,I am very happy with it..I did have to fly to Denver and drive it home,but anything for a road trip.I figgered that if it wasn't what I really wanted,I could just sell it locally as most the ones here were going for 3K to 5K more than I paid and are actually in short supply..

The one that I REALLY wanted was in Vernon Tx and sold locally before I could bid and was an '03 with 85K miles,intake and exhaust mods,chipped and gauaged, had second and third row DVDs and a couple of other add-ons for 2K more than the one I bought..Day after I bought the white '01,the dealer from Tx called and said the deal fell thru and he would sell it to me for 21K.. I almost cried....

 

after seeing that price on the 03, I think I will cry.
