I think most anyone with the leather trim and more than ten miles on the vehicle has the top or sides of the steering wheel lose it's color. I have both a 03 EX (parchment) and a 03 F250 (gray) with a big black spot at the top of the steering wheel where the original finish has worn off. Has anyone found a rub-on, spray-on, paint-on, etc substance that will cover over and make the wheel look like new (or near new)?
I don't know where'bouts your located, however up here in the North, we have these foam pads made by "Mr. Clean".
I don't know what's in them (Perhaps i don't want to know!!!!), however i have used these on the steering wheel and i would say 90% of the black is now gone.... I have also used it on markings on the exterior lower body and interio trim on my LTD to remove markings and it has worked like a charm, leaving no abrasive marks at all...
I just solved the problem by getting a new wheel. I think the guy's name is Truck-Van-Man on eBay. It's a wood rim wheel with some leather. High quality wheel. Had it on my truck for a few months now and have been very satisfied with it. The factory Ford wheels do not last on these trucks, it seems. The two Excursions I drove (mine and another I test drove) had wheels that were pretty well destroyed by 90k.

I was debating on a new wheel but dreaded removing the wheel with an airbag. How did you overcome the airbag?

Removing an airbag wheel is not a big deal on these trucks. Do the following:
1) Disconnect the battery
2) Hold the brake pedal for 30 seconds (don't know if this actually does anything, but my friend had told me to do this to drain power out of the capacitors)
3) Remove the little covers on the steering wheel that cover the bolts for the airbag
4) Unscrew airbag
5) Pull airbag off, hold it carefully, disconnect wires
6) Carefully set airbag off to the side (I make a point of always keeping it with the bag itself facing forwards)
Do whatever else you need, assembly is reverse of removal. I haven't had any issues on the cars I've done this on.

Second this. Both my Excursion and Expedition have a new wheel from the man. Looks like a new interior...the Ford pleather (I guess that's what they call it) sucks. It behaves as cheap viny and seems to "melt" under rubbing and pressure. I have tried to clean and fix. ..I tell you, just get a new wheel, you'll smile
