If you are SURE it's clean as a whistle inside the engine, change to "regular" 10w30 detergent oil ASAP, before it gets sludged up. Delo400 diesel oil is a good bet on older engines.

Walford56 check out the site. Not too sure of the cost, I believe it's over $100 bucks for sure.

I understand what you guys are saying about the high volume pumps. I do have the screw in plug at the timing chain. The pump I have is a Mellings pump. Initial startup gives me a higher volumn of oil to get oil to the upper valve train quicker. After the engine is a warm temps, it drops to a almost normal reading of 40-60 lbs. Back in high school, I was fortunate to have worked with Ed Pink Racing engines. Although the engines we built were 500+ HP, we did build engines for daily street rod use or occasional racing. We always used the same types of pumps. Ed Pinks philosophy was, "it's better to have too much oil pressure than too little or non at all". I've never heard of anyone having problems like you guys described before. I do agree that a stock pump is sufficient for a stock enging and probably a modified street performance engine as well. It's that rule of stock is usually better than modified to avoid problems. I've always been nervous when I see someones oil pressure at 5 lbs, and it only goes 20lbs at acceleration. Interesting info though, thanks guys. Makes me think???? So what is the purpose of having a deep oil pan or transmission pan for more capacity of oil?

thanks you guys!!!I really like the idea of the oil filter that you can reuse!!!Also ,I only saw the top end of my engine and it looked clean. So should I change oil to detergeant oil now after 50 years?I KNOW THE 272 WAS NEVER WORKED ON.THANKS

imlowr2, Larger pans provide more capacity but also allow for cooler oil temps.

High volume pumps are for race engines set up with loose mains and rods, which gives more HP but at the expense of engine life. They are shooting for a season's life. We have tighter clearances and are looking for years of life. If the pump produces more volume than can go to the system, it builds pressure and dumps back into the oil pan via the relief valve.
