I am biased

If you play in mud, the diesel makes the front-end heavier, making it want to sink in the mud more. How much more, I have no idea.

Otherwise, for longevity, mileage, you name it, you can't beat the 7.3

On the other hand, think how expensive it will be to fix.

I don't know the specs of the 7.3, but I would imagine the 3valve V10 to be about the same power wise. I like gas better than diesel and think the V10 is a great engine. It's quiet, it's powerful. Gas costs less than diesel where I live and the V10 gets ok mileage, and good mileage for the amount of power it puts out.

it;s 362 at 4,750 rpm for hp
and 457 at 3,250 for torque
415 cubic inches of hard working smooth running motor

while the psd 6.0 is 363 cubic inches
325@3,300 hp
570@2,000 torque

1999-2003 - 7.3 L Power Stroke turbo-Diesel V8, 250 hp/500 ft.lbf (Super Duty

To think I have 85% of the torque of the good-ole 7.3 out of the box, that's not bad.

(assuming 425ft/lbs for my '01 vs. 500 for the 7.3)

Then, add on my age-old argument about revving out farther with more gear multiplication (downshifting), the only diff is mileage, not "doing the job".

Krewat,

I think the 7.3L was available with 3.73 as the lowest differential gearing in the SRW. So, out of the box, a 3valver with 4.30 gearing has more torque than the 7.3L. I'd say the V10 should be able to do any job the PSD can do, considering the amount of torque can be between the 7.3L and the 6.0 (based on gearing options).

Thing is, I'm not anti-diesel at all, but the V10 is so good. I didn't want the up front cost when I bought new in '05, because I didn't need the power, but the V10 option is so cheap I couldn't see why not. I was considering the 5.4L and might have bought it if the V10 wasn't available. For me the V10 power or PSD power isn't necessary (it's definitely nice, don't get me wrong), but for $600 (msrp, not what I paid) the V10 option is a no-brainer. I can't understand why the V10 doesn't FLY out the dealership doors (except that it's perceived to be a gas hog, and in some respects is...compared to a Honda Civic Hybrid).

Now that I have the V10 power I really like having it, but needs vs wants...I only needed the 5.4L. If I needed a diesel, I'd buy one, but the V10 being what it is I don't know why anyone would truly need a diesel over the V10.

dito here,i don't need it other then when i hook up the boats 2 times a year each way. cost was dirt cheap and after talking to fred and our mia wrenchtraveler i settled for the v10 and am very glad they both talked me into it.

i have had both diesels the 6.0 did make my sick about ford and how the truck was worked on. but the v10 can make any one super happy
