Hi Gang
I have an '06 F150 screw, 4X4 with a 5.4l. I'm tossing the idea of putting a K&N in but figured I would ask what every thinks before picking one up. So what does every one think the best option for replacing my air filter is?
Personally, I would stick to a good OEM filter.I have had a K&N before, and it got chunked after the first "cleaning".In my opinion, its a waste of money.
Are you looking to replace the whole intake or just the filter?
Few of the intakes actually increase the "cold" air into your engine. Alot of them draw air in from the hood area that is warmer than the air that the factory inlet in the fender can provide.
Some increase the actual volume of air you are able to draw in under WOT. This is something to keep in mind that the gains for intakes are measured at WOT.
For the air filter alone the oiled filters can cause fouling on sensors and a world of hurt for your wallet on repairs. There more "high flow" High performance" filters coming out that are not oiled beforehand at the factory and are not required to be oiled to work but will most likely state that for maximum protection oil it or some such lingo.
Personally I am still looking at doing an intake. Right now I am just using Wix filters until I decide if I want to save up the money to waste on a Banks intake or not.
Most will tell you the intakes just makes more noise under the hood. Which is fine by me.
I'm just looking at the filter right now. I am planning to put a tuner on her shortly. Thanks for the info guys, I think I'll save the money and put a good paper filter back on. I had read on here that a lot people have had issues with the oiled filters but thought I would ask any way.
A buddy of mine took his air hose off where it was just an open hole right there by the air filter... it was sucking warm air from the engine, it sounded like it was gonna suck that hood under, and at the same time he seen some improvement... I thought these vehicles like colder air? What gives/
I ran a K&N filter on my Explorer for several years ... end result was a gummed up MAF sensor and air intake. The improvement in mileage was insignificant, imho.
Somebody on one of the F-150 forum sites did a pretty good experiment with different air filters (paper, oiled mesh and foam). The long and short of the experiment was that all filters still let some dirt through. He also tested for air flow and found the various filters had insignificant differences in flow volume. There was a SLIGHTLY greater flow rate with oiled mesh types at VERY high rpm ranges. That might help at a drag racing track.
The end result/finding was that all worked pretty good when they were clean/new. Over oiling the mesh types can cause problems downstream.
I now know for sure that I will save the $$ and skip the K&N. Sounds to me like a tuner is the way to get the most improvement in all areas.
Thanks again gang!

yep i have a K/N as well. as soon as i get my lazy butt off of this chair to go to parts store i will be going with a paper filter. i had to take my throttle body off and clean it, then had to clean the MAF sensor. K/N makes good filters dont get me wrong. but its just not the way to go with these trucks.
