From my owners manual for a 93 f350 manual trans. 4:10 rear 13000 GCWR tow weight max 7200. single rear wheels

Auto trans 4:10 rear 13000 GCWR max tow weight 7600 single rear wheels

dual wheels add 300 lbs to tow weights.

That seems on the low side to me. By what you're reading, a DRW automatic with 4.10 gears can only "legally" pull a 7900 lb trailer? I'm looking at a 29' 5th wheel built in 92 that weighs over 9500 lb. I know there are 35-40' available that weighed well over that.
Or is 13K for max trailer weight? I thought the combined would be closer to 20K lbs. Am I understanding you wrong?

The IDI engine is not noted for HP. it is only rated at 185 HP and yes it is the combo 13K lbs and tow rate of 7900# trailer. I have towed my 29 ft TT and it weighed in at 8500 and it was all it wanted to pull with a 5 sp with 4:10 rear. Especially up grades of over 4%. The fifth wheel might pull a little easier depending on the sail area of the front of the trailer.

Is there a big difference in weight capacity between the 460 and the Diesel?

I'm not concerned really with the performance of the IDI. My plans call for a Cummins 24V engine swap down the road. I've pulled many trailers that weighed over 10K lbs, just not on a regular basis. The IDI doesn't do it quickly, but it gets the job done.

Very little difference - the only thing is fuel economy and lugging power of the diesel is better.

I know the differences between the 460 and the 7.3. I was asking more along the lines of the tow rating that is listed in your manual.

Thanks for your help,
Jason

When they figure ratings they take into consideration the engine, drivetrain, springs. etc. So if your going to a non stock item (bigger diesel) then other things come into play. Transmission capacity for example.

In my manual there wasn't enough capacity difference to list.
