66 f100 2x4 to 4x4 anyone ever done it

A buddy of mine has a 74 f250 4x4 long wheel base with a trashed bed and body and I mean trashed not worth saveing. Has anyone ever tried droping a mid 60's body and bed on top of a 4x4 frame. My truck is a long wheel base as well though only a half ton. If so what major problems should I be expecting. I talked my self out of cutting the 66 up for the strip but I'm going to have fun with it one way or another!!!!

The rear frame dimensions are different between the two so the bed will probably require some modifications. I think I have heard the front frame is the same. I have however not done a conversion of that type. I think the wheel base is the same but that would be worth checking.

My 66 had the wrong bed on it when I bought it because the guy bought a bed for a 66 4x4 without knowing the f100 and f250 where copmpletely different trucks. There was a 6 inch gap between the cab and bed.

Good Luck

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Aug-02 AT 07:09 AM (EST)]The cab should fit ok, but the wheelbase is longer on the 74 (133" vs 129") so there will be problems on the wheel openings unless you shorten the frame. I saw some pictures of one a guy did that DIDN'T shorten the frame. Looked pretty funky with that big gap. I think in 77 they widened the rear of the frame to 37", but that 74 should be 34" like the 66. Good luck, It's a pretty big job. Later,

Hey thanks for the resonses I'm going to take my tape measure and some paper over and start measuring. That was my biggest concern was the front to rear wheel base but I'm still going to give it the once over and try to iron out some of the problems before getting started. Thanks for the replys

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Aug-02 AT 07:52 PM (EST)]Tim, I forgot to mention that there's a 65 4x4 on Ebay right now that's been done simular to what you're talking about. It's got the 64-66 Styleside bed on a "shorter" wheelbase 4x4 chassis. What he did was just elongate the rear wheel opening for the difference. It looks pretty good too. I'll post a link if I can figure it out.
Good luck,
