It seems to me that the '73 to '79 F-100's are demanding a higher price then the '67-'72 F-100 in the same condition.I see on classified 2000 that when a teriffic looking '78 or '79 Ford F'100 is for sale it invaribably will be seven or eight thousand
bucks as opposed to the '67 through '72's. Anyone no why????

I don't have a great answer, other than personally I grew up with the 73-79 and think they have a more classic, yet rugged design. I remember when the 1980 models came out I almost puked, and I thought the metal was thinner in the bodies. Now look at how rusty an average early 80s is in comparison! I don't have any bad experiences with 67-72, other than I have seen some with the cab mounts so rusty, that the steering won't work any more! I just think Ford hit it right in 73-79 and that is why they sold so many of them! Greg58

oh i dont know, i've got a 71, and i love it, i'd never let it go for under $5000... but it is true about the cab mounts and steering... maybe someday i'll fix mine...lol front cab mounts are collapsed, and the steering column is coming apart at the bottom above the shifter mechanism...whooops? helps to have an inspection mech for a friend....lol

Thats an easy one. The cab got more room in 73, along with factory A/C that didnt hang below the dash and take up your golve box. Factory disk brakes on most applications are a big thing too. As far as style goes, I think the 73-79 looks more like a tuff truck, but a 67 would make a much nicer lookin hotrod. When I look at a 67 I see a LOT of similarites with the 65 Falcon, which is one of my favorite lil cars.

Fundamentally, I think the answer is very simple:
Newer vehicles are worth more than older counterparts.
This is very evident in comparing almost any vehicle ever made. ie a 2000 truck is going to command a higher price than a 1999 with identical options, condition and miles.

LAST EDITED ON 30-Mar-01 AT 09:23 AM (EST)[p]hi guys, new member here, thought I say hi and introduce myself, my name is Shawn and I own a 73 F-100 Explorer truck.
bought it as a project and stopped working on it a few months back.
pictures can be seen here:
http://www.geocities.com/v8killer_90/truck/Thumbs1.htm
got a question, I bought a new fuel pump but it's not like the one that's already on there, the one on there has threads on the bottom for the filter canister to screw into,
the new one looks like a regular fuel pump with no filter attatchment capability.
now the question is, can I just put the new one on and forget about the fuel filter canister? it has an inline filter right at the carburator also, so I don't see the use for 2 filters.
please let me know if I have a wrong pump or is this the new setup and I should just delete the canister.
one more thing.
I live in Washington state, what do you guys thing a truck like this is worth considering the work I've done:
it has a V-8 360 BTW
new tires, complete dual exhuaust system, spray in bedliner, rebuild carb, new battery, alternator, voltage regulator, steering gear box.
the body work is almost all done and it's ready for paint, here's what I'm thinking:
sell it the way it is ( runs great, exhust manifold leaks)
or paint it and start dumping money into it, probably built the motor with 390 crank and rods.
thanks for your help.

Hey Shawn, good to hear from you and welcome. Rather than add your questions to an existing thread, you ought to start a completely new thread so that you can garner more responses geared toward your problems.
To answer the fuel pump question, I've never seen an FE pump without the canister attached. That's not to say what you have won't work. That is if it bolts up properly and the arm is identical to the original. What I'd do is take the new pump back to the parts store and see if they have some other numbers. Check applications for 352, 360, 390, etc.
Hard to say what your truck's worth and if you should sell it. There have been many discussions as to truck values so you should use the search feature associated with this topic. Sell or not? That's your decision. I've had a lot of people tell me I'm crazy for restoring my truck and sinking all that money into it, but now that it's done most are singing a different song. Furthermore, I've no got a practically new vehicle that will probably out-last me. You decide what you want to do with your truck.

I am 99% sure my pump has the filter canister below it. I don't have an in-line filter, and I am positive I replaced the filter when I installed my new carb. Again, I don't see why you need two filters, I'm just saying that my '73 F100 w/ 360 has the same pump as your original one. You should be able to find one like it.
BTW, there should be several "icons" at the top of the 67-79 message board. One of these is "post". (You won't see it if you are reading a particular thread.)

i dont agree with that because if you take fer an example.a 71 hemi cuda convertible with a four speed is worth over a 100,000. dollars were as a 72 cuda with identicle options is worth less.so that means that what people like has every thing to do with the what they are willing to pay.i have owned both body styles and i perfer the 73 79 better personal taste.thats what its all about.

I think a lot of it has to do with "what the other guy has" senerio; often with no logic or reasoning applied. Take Levi's 501 for example. I have been wearing them ever since Velcro laced shoes came out. I think most people would agree that 501's are the most popular jean of all time. For what reason? I get twice the life out of my Rustlers & Wranglers for less than half the price. After only about a dozen washings, the crotch in my Levi's start to break open; maybe it is just the way I am "built".
Here are my LOGICAL reasons why I prefer the '67-'72:
No P.I.T.A. emmision control devices; although, I don't have to worry about that where I live--for the time being.
The latch, striker, and hindges on the doors are simply the most positive and durable of any newer model to date. There is a unique, clean sound when opened & closed that almost says "you don't need to slam me to shut me, Pal". Take a stroll through a wrecking yard and compare doors as you open and close them. My dad's '70 F250 has about 350,000 miles on it and the doors still work like new, and they have never been off or worked on.
The metal used for the bed is also a much thicker guage, especially the 4x8 section used between the wheel wells. Again, check out the wrecking yards and compare which beds, on average, have the most dents, bends, and waves in them. Try flexing the top of the bed sides outward. You can almost bend the newer ones with your bare hands; the '67-'72 models don't even budge.

As for me I'll take a 67-72 anyday. But I have no problem with the way the 73-79 looks. I especially favor the 78-79. I also agree with the guy above who said that the 67-72 make better hot rods. I drive a 1970 f-100 and I love the fact that I don't need to worry at all about emissions. The A/C under the dash doesn't make me loose any sleep. As a matter of fact the only series of Ford trucks I don't care for is the 80-86. They don't appeal to me at all but I would still rather push one than drive an off brand truck. Also I love FE motors and they were more common in pre 72 trucks but once again have no gripes with the 335, windsor and 385 blocks. Basically I just love fords. What more can I say!

I can't tell anyone that they're wrong on this one...
...but personally the 67-72 series is the best looking truck ever in the history of the planet Earth.
I love the 73-79 series as well.... I have one of both series. The 73-79 trucks borrow styling from the 67-72. The grille inserts in 76-77 trucks are copies of 71 inserts made to fit the newer grille shell. The overall shape of the truck is very similar, especially wheel wells. Look at a 73-87 Chevrolet wheel wells (if you can stand it) and you'll know why they're ugly as a sack of potatos. No style there!
The shape of the hood on the 67-72 series takes the cake... it's got a larger ridge in the middle, and the big block letters up front that say "Frauuuud".
The 73-79 trucks are more user friendly for sure though... more with disc brakes in the front, more with power steering (that works), more with dog-o-matic, and they look more like a new truck which a lot of guys worry about. Can't be afraid of the old... The rubbermaid drivin' crowd tries real hard with their taillight blackouts and fog lamps, but I think they know they don't have a real truck.

I don't agree with Hitme & Jowilker.. Just because a truck is newer doesn't mean they are worth more money. I can tell you if watch Classified 2000 you will see the '78's in piticular are runnung 6,7,and 8 thousand if they are in Prime condition. I own a 69,70, 72 and a 78. What I don't like about the 67 thru 72 is they rust on the hood and bed sides where you don't have the concave feature. you will find no rust on the '73 thru '79 in that area, however that little shortbed is as cute as a button in the earlier '67 thru '72...
