transmission slipping??

I got a 02 ranger 4.0 4x4 auto and the trans seems like its slipping. if im going like 15-20 mph (in second or third gear) and give it quite a bit of gas, the truck jumps. its been doin this for a while and i took it to Mankato Ford back in June and they told me it was just the drive shaft sliding on the spline and it was jumping because there was no grease. if this is the case i would think it would do this whenever you floor it not just around second gear (maybe third). is my trans going out??

Thanks

Hmm...not natural (obviously), odd for an auto. Always done this? I'd say lube the drive shaft and see if that fixes it, if not, you may have real tranny problems.

You most likely have the 5R55E transmission in your Ranger. These trannies are known for bad valve bodies that cause that same symptom, I had to have mine replaced [under warranty]. That would be what I would look at first.

Are you sure it's not an engine mis under load? Spark plug wires can cause a mis-fire under load.

You can try lubing the driveshaft to see if that helps:

i dont think its an engine mis because it only does it in like 3rd gear (i think). Im goin to experiment a little today, with flooring it, using 1st and 2nd gear manually and some other stuff. Thanks for the help.
PW01 i hope your wrong!! LOL

hey man, do you have and lights that come on on your instrument cluster? abs? check eng soon? also do you notice a fluctuation of you speedometer needle? if so i just had this problem which caused my tranny to slip. i was a speed sensor mounted on top of my rear diff. if you have speedometer needle jumping but no abs light its prob speed sensor in you tranny. not sure if your truck is doing any of this but thought i would supply the info. let me know what you fix was. take care!

My truck seems to slip too

I also have an '02 4.0 4X4 Ranger that seems to do the same thing. If I am cruising at normal road speeds, or about 45 mph, (I have not yet determined what gear it is when this happens) and I hit the gas a little bit, the truck tranny seems to slip before it before it grabs again. Yes, the motor revs up, then it somewhat slams into gear. Is this normal for this truck and should I even worry about it?
