Talking Coolant Level

This question is not so much as to the coolant loss due to overflow, but rather just loss of coolant.

I installed a coolant filter and brought the level up to the MAX line on my degas bottle. At first I added about 1/3 of a gallon to get the MAX level as before.

Now I'm running lower than the MAX line on the degas bottle, any ideas? The truck has 1600 miles and does not puke coolant. I added more coolant to raise the level to MAX level again and within 300 miles, the level was down, again..

What do you think???

check your oil. make sure there is no coolant in the oil. if there isnt anythere. pressure check the system. sometimes there is a leak that you cant notice untill you have pressure on it. if you pressure the system up to like 15 psi or so and let it sit it should hold the pressure without dropping more than like a pound an hour (I think that is what the rule of thumb is). if it wont hold the pressure then start looking for leaks. Did the degas tank go down about the amount to fill the new filter and lines? Or has it gone down significantly? Sounds to me like maybe you just filled it up to the line and the air wasn't out of the system. Now that its topped up, is it still going down, leaks on the floor, in the oil?

Was you loosing coolant prior to the install? If not - check your connections once again for the install.

I keep my coolant level at the minimum mark when cold.

After installing a coolant filter, I added to the 1/2 way mark knowing the coolant filter would take some. After driving a few miles to warm up, it took 2 days of driving to check and recheck the bottle as air gets trapped in the system and must work its way out.

Check all connections for leaks and drive until temp guage comes up to normal then inspect while motor is running while at home... look for leaks, drips or other visable problems. I take it you had no problems before... otherwise you would not have posted the question???

All you need is for the coolant level at the min mark when cold... keep it there and you will be fine. I think you have an air-lock issue and your motor is trying to expell the air and your seeing coolant levels decreasing each day as it heats & cools (each cycle).

Good luck,

Jeff
