Talking mystery trans. ... whut ees it, mon?!

Todays riddle... what's bigger than my '67 C4, has a really big square pan with the dip stick tube going straight into the pan, a cast iron body with removable bell housing cover and what could be a "c3" begining the casting number? Could I have discovered a C5? I've heard the c3 has a small "detour" in the square shape of the pan but the c4's and c5's were almost square. The guy that said"sure, you can have it" said it came out of his 64 T-bird. Hmmm. Also wouldn't
a c3 be smaller than a c4? "Now the boy's just talking CRAZY talk!"

Sounds like an FMX to me. Separate bell housing and transmission case with the case being cast iron. The case bolts to the bell housing like a standard transmission with 4 bolts.

yup, sounds like a fmx. does it have 5 or 6 bellhousing to block bolts??
with a C3 casting #, i bet it is a 5 bolt bell. worth bucks to someone wanting to put a 3 speed auto into a early ford with 5 bolt block

It's a CruiseOMatic not an FMX.
The FMX has the filler tube pushing into the case whereas the CruiseOMatic has a pan fill.
A C5 is just an overgrown C4.They are both aluminum case and bell housings

Wow! thanx for all the input! It never occured to me about the FMX or the CruiseOMatic. The case has 4 bolts connecting to the bell housing and the bell housing has 6 to the block if you count the lower starter one. what years did the CruiseOMatic cover?

The dual range CruiseOmatic dropped out of existence around 1966.
It was replaced with the FMX.
Both are similar in appearance. The determining factor is filler tube position.
